wiring help for '05 Outback/Legacy

hey all - I'm posting here and over at NASIOC. I'm upgrading the sub in my WRX to something better and now have a spare Clarion SRV-303.

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-aXD5pjcktHO/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=51000&I=020SRV303

I'd like to put it in my Outback - figured I would just tap into the rear door speaker leads and power it from somewhere in the center console.

Has anyone taken apart the Outback/Legacy interior and seen where exactly the speaker wires run? Or where to power in the center console?

Figured I'd ask before I started ripping the new car apart.

Thanks!

You might find that the harness for the OBXT subwoofer will be your best bet. No splicing wires, no hacking harnesses. You would actuall be best suited to sell the Clarion and get a Subaru Subwoofer, might be a lot less trrouble. If you must use your Clarion, definately get the subwoofer pass through harness.

Why tell him to toss the Clarion? I wouldn't doubt that it's a better product than the stocker because of its extra controls. I've posted it as an alternative before but got negative repsonses. I'm not going to buy either -- I'll get around to installing my system eventually and it's far more comprehensive.

I'd have to say you could grab the speaker wires at each door pillar where they go into the rubber accordion boot going to each door. If that's too much of a pita, you could always buy both wiring adapters from any car stereo store (one into the stock radio, one into the stock harness, splice them together and join your sub's inputs in the middle). It's the same Subaru harness from the last few years.

I started this whole process by deciding not to get the stock sub - for not _that_ much more money I could seriously upgrade the WRX system and get the better Clarion in the Outback. The Clarion is OK - fills out nicely.

I figured better than ripping the dash apart and running wires back I could tap into the door pillars. But if I can use harnesses - is there a problem with color continuity across the wires throught the harnesses?

Thanks Rick - it's great to see those are finally available. $75 seems pretty steep if I need two of them! Seems I could pick up a used stock sub for ~$100, with harness. I'll dig around the interior and tap into the wires; see how it sounds. If I can't get it to mix in with the stock system (i had an amp for the fronts in the WRX) I could just pick up a used Subie sub.

Figured if I had it around I'd try it out before selling it.

You can use a single Subaru pass-through harness for $75 or buy the two I mentioned earlier for $20 each. If you use the aftermarket harnesses, you just connect all the same-colored wires and splice in your sub inputs where appropriate. Taking the radio out is pretty quick, requiring only 6-8 phillips screws and pulling up on the trim surrounding the gearshift.

SubaruParts.com has the H6300AS030 "80 Watt" factory sub for $68. According to the description, it includes the wiring harness. That's less than their price for the harness alone! It's listed under Subaru Parts > Accessories and OEM Perform > 1997 > Legacy > Sound System (bottom of page, with picture).

As John M said, you can build your own "pass through harness" (I call it a T-harness) using after-market 'forward' and reverse car stereo wiring harnesses. Those are available for less than $20 each, too. Just be sure to find ones that have all 14 wires, or your stock radio illumination won't work properly. The ones from Crutchfield (actually made by Metra) only have 13 wires.

Be careful when buying a used sub -- some sellers are too lazy to de-install the harness and just cut it off near the sub. The complete harness is pictured in this thread on WRXfanactics.com: 04 stereo pin outs (8th post in thread, by "AaronBrown," not the crappy picture posted by "REX NFX"; scroll down for more pics of whole harness).
