MikeofLA Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 Hey guys, quick question. I have an '06 LGT (limited I think) and I was wondering if it has a "SmartKey" or can I just get another one made with just a regular blank? I only have 1 key, and would hate to lose it, but I also don't want to spend no $300 on a freakin key. Thanks!
leofski Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 Can you get a blank key made for emergencies, and just deal with the alarm until you get a new key programmed? I know you can do this with the 04+ Forester.
burnout8488 Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 I've been using a plain old metal key on my '05. Did '06 introduce the chipped key?
whitetiger Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 the PATS key may be just for LGT's ? my 05 has a transponder key.
tzdevil323 Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 My 05' LGT has a transponder too, I paid something like $112 at the dealer to get one cut and programed. I'm hungry:bbq:This burger is never gonna cook.
Deadzep Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 you could make a couple plain copies, then stash the oem key in the dash somewhere pretty much inaccessible. after rereading your post, i'm not sure if you're asking about the immobilizer feature or the remote alarm/lock features or both. what do you mean by 'regular blank'?
Chameleon Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 I know the 05 LGT has a transponder .... u only had one key too and just spent $125 @ the dealer for a second one (cut & programmed)
mclarenf3 Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 2005 Legacy GT models had a transponder. 2005 Legacy models had a regular key. In 2006+, all models have a transponder key.
MikeofLA Posted July 17, 2010 Author Posted July 17, 2010 Thanks Guys! Huge help! I guess I'm spending the cash. Anyone have a spare transponder key that's uncut By the way, I don't need it NOW. I just want one incase I lock my keys in the car or I lose them. Thanks again.
Mickeytl Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 You can find a good deal on ebay...cuz that's where I got mine.
mclarenf3 Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 What I've done is I've got my key cut even though it doesn't have the transponder. I then keep that extra key in my wallet. That way, if I ever lock my keys in the car, I am able to get back into my car. I do this with all my cars, regardless of whether or not there is a transponder.
underground000 Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 What you can to is take the transponder out and mount it near the transponder receiver (requires hacking up the original key) And then make blank keys Ace Hardware charges around $90 to cut and program chipped keys (This is Hawaii pricing, dont know price on mainland) 5eat downshift rev match:) Powder coated wheels: completed:)
