humming noise???

ive got an 08 2.5i, auto, and it gives off this loud humming noise, which seems to be directly proportional to the RPM's. I bought the car with 25k, and now comming up on 36K. Its made the noise since day one, but i dont know if its just me or not, but it seems that its getting louder. does anyone else have this? is it normal? its not the sound of the engine, it even drowns out the soound of the engine. any clues?

Questions:

1. Is the loud humming directly proportional to the RPM's or to the MPH?

2. If you put the car in neutral at a given mph does the noise remain constant?

3. It does not sound like the engine and seems to be getting louder - when you are in park and rev the motor does the humming make noise?

My first guess is wheel bearings.

its proportional to the rpms... if i throw it in neutral, the noise goes away. no humming when i rev the engine in park or neutral. i was thinking it has something to do with the driveshaft... maybe some missing insulation or sound padding somewhere? its like a mmmmm noise, and a very subtle vibration, which i cant tell if its just from the road or from the noise. Its loud, but almost seems like its normal.

You seem confused. If you throw it in neutral the noise goes away and when you rev it in park so it is NOT proportional to RPM it is proportional to mph. It almost seems normal or like road noise...

Once again I bet it is a REAR wheel bearing. Call the dealer and tell them. I bet they say it is a rear wheel bearing and under warranty. Have someone sit in the back seat and if they can tell which side the sound is coming from it is probably this.

well, if i throw it in neutral at speed, the noise goes away... thats whats making me think its related to the rpm's/ driveshaft.

It does NOT make noise at speed in neutral?! Gosh, I am not sure anymore maybe a belt? I hope it is not a driveshaft issue. That would be crappy.
