tbart16 Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 How tough to do a clutch in a 97 legacy? Anyone have a write up? thanks
SchwarzeEwigkt Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Not hard, just a bit time consuming. Here's a synopsis: * Drain the tranny * Pull the starter * Drop the exhaust * Pull the front driveshafts * Pull the propshaft * Remove the tranny crossmember * Support the tranny with a tranny jack * Disconnect all the crap going to the transmission (electrical stuff, shift rod, clutch hydraulics) * Disconnect the dogbone * Unbolt the tranny * Lift the front of the engine up (gently!) with a jack to get the tranny down * Wiggle the tranny loose * Drop it * Get it out of the way * Unbolt the clutch plate, take it and the disc out * Inspect everything, consider removing the flywheel and doing the rear mainseal * Have the flywheel resurfaced if needed * Replace the pilot bearing * Install a new clutch disk and plate with a centering tool and follow the torquing instructions * Replace the throwout bearing over the input shaft * Lightly grease the splines on the input shaft and the release fork * Reinstall the tranny and test the clutch action * Put it all back together * Refill the tranny * Drive it lightly until the clutch breaks in (a couple hundred starts) * Enjoy Pretty sure I didn't leave anything out.
98quiksilvergt Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 I would definitely get the flywheel resurfaced. It's only 25-35 bucks. Then you don't have to worry about any chattering.
tbart16 Posted July 19, 2010 Author Posted July 19, 2010 thanks. What is the shop time for this job? I would def resurface the flywheel and change the rear main
Outbackusjunkus Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Or you could pull the engine to get at the clutch...a lot of folks prefer this method...probably the same amount of work either way...
