TViddy Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 Hi guys. Brand new to this forum and needed some help on buying this 2009 Legacy 3.0R Limited. From the looks of the picture it looks new. CARFAX is clean. Car is also Subaru Certified. Only problem is that it has 79,500 miles. Asking price is $15,995...should I talk them down more? Now, should I even consider this car with such high mileage? Are 3.0R's reliable? What problems should I expect at over 100K? Does timing chain need replacement or serviced? Can I use Regular 87 octane gas? Any help or info would be appreciated. Thanks.
nadracer Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 First off you'll have to use premium in this car. I think its 91 or above. With such high milage the 100k service interval is fast approaching if its not already arrived depending on how much it was driven. Better safe than sorry to just have it done to freshen the car up if you were to pick this machine up(add that into your costs right off the bat). 15995 seems high and sounds like it is priced like it's in perfect machine condition (blue/black value with no flaws) which is really hard to believe. Something to note about CarFax, it only works when people report to CarFax and not everyone does. The 3.0R are as reliable as most Subarus of the past 3-5 years. If it's really a nice car definitely talk them down. Ask for something less than what you think it's worth then let them work back up to what you think you should be paying.
TViddy Posted July 12, 2010 Author Posted July 12, 2010 Thanks for the input. Just to add, Edmunds TRUE VALUE PRICING for the 3.0R, Dealer Certified is retailed at $23,520 with the 79.5K miles accounted for. So Im skeptical why they are asking $15,995. TViddy Posted July 12, 2010 Author Posted July 12, 2010 What are you folks with the 3.0R averaging for mileage? Currently, Im leasing a 2008 Infiniti G37S which has horrible gas mileage at 16.8-17.1 average per my car computer. I drive mainly short distances with slow highway traffic and some stop and go. My commute is only 8 miles each way.
badbasser98 Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 winter slow or city driving avg around 15-18. Summer is around 18-20, highway is around 24-26. On a longer trip without going above 60MPH I have seen near 30 in summer.
TViddy Posted July 13, 2010 Author Posted July 13, 2010 Thanks for the input. How is the reliability? Any problems? How many miles do you have? winter slow or city driving avg around 15-18. Meshanks07 Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 Damn that's a lot of miles. I have a '09 with 6500. As for reliability, it's a great car.
Kenpachi Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 You might get more replies in the 4G forum, as the 2009 3.0R is a 4G model. Not nagging, just trying to help. The MY listing on the 5G forum can be deceptive to US owners, as the US didn't see the 5G until 2010. ...and wow, that a lot of miles in one year. You'll be over 100k before you know it. That car could be hard to resell in a few years. Good luck with your search!
Meshanks07 Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 There is a 3.0 for sale in the classifieds section for $20k with 29k miles. Check it out.

TViddy Posted July 15, 2010 Author Posted July 15, 2010 Thanks guys. But I do have a trade in. And the color isnt my type. Thanks anyways.
dvran Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 I would pass, too many miles. Major service coming at 100K. I'm not sure whether the H6 requires premium fuel. I would check that first too.
Mr. Sinister Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 IIRC, the H6 does not require premium fuel. I'd say it's the most reliable engine that Subaru has right now. If the 3.0R with 6MT was availble in the US, I'd be driving it.
theflystyle Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 ^ it states premium recommened... following is from cars101.com Premium 91 Octane unleaded recommended for optimum performance but is not required of course since day one my car has had only shell premium in her. its a great car but that thing must have been on the road 24x7 to get that many miles that fast. i have an 08 with 22k. i would base the price on nada.com as well. i would pass. your bound to find better deals with less mileage
