waxing after using claybar

Recommended Posts

went out yesterday and bought a kit from mothers containing carnuba cleaner wax, a clay bar and the special spray to use with it. my question:

1. should I use anything other than the carnuba cleaner wax to wax/polish the car after claying?

2. do I need to use claybar on whole car, or mostly on the hood and roof?

3. what's the best type of cloth to use to apply the wax/polish?

1. It depends on what condition your car is in. The cleaner wax from Mother's won't do an awful lot of swirl removal or anything like that. Its just basically to help clean off paint contamination that ends up being there. The rust dots from industrial fallout (see this article for more on that) may not be totally removed just by claying. The metal bits that cause it will be gone, but the paint cleaner will be great at removing the rust dots that may be left behind. Its just basically a paint cleaner and not much else. If you have swirls then you will need a much more agressive polish and probably a machine.

2. Clay the entire car. IFO (industrial fallout) gets on the car at all angles. The hood, roof, trunk and bumpers will be the most affected by it, but the entire car will benefit from the clay.

3. Microfibers are the best to buff of the wax or polish. You can probably just use a regular yellow foam applicator to apply it. If you are going to order online then there are some really great microfiber and terry cloth applicators that are good for applying product. You may even be able to find some of those off the shelf. Just be prepared for a workout on your fingers. The worst part about applying products by hand is what it has done to my fingers. I'm going to have arthritis before I'm 35 at this rate.

thanks for the response.

1. I don't have any swirls, just some scratches. probably from washing the car and not rinsing my mit (i do now). When i run my had over the car I do feel some bumps, but overall it's not too bad.

2. i did purchase some microfiber towels from the auto store so I'll use those.

Thanks again for the help
