Legacy audiophile, how deep an aftermarket stereo can I fit?

Just bought my 2005 Legacy 2.5i about 3 months ago and I'm loving it. (Still have two years of my PharmD left, I think when schools done I might be adding a 2nd Legacy to my collection)

 

I'm putting together supplies to replace the stock 1 CD stereo with a DVD/MP3/USB unit.

 

Before I start buying and ripping things apart I figured it would be good to know how much space I have behind the stereo face.

 

I'm planning on using the double din face plate from Scosche. I have manual climate controls.

 

So, anyone who has taken the plunge and installed aftermarket stereos, in their 4th gen... what kind of room will I have back there?

 

New stereo is 7.1 x 4.2 x 6.8 inches

Don't know the specific dimensions, but it should give you at least an inch, maybe 2 beyond a "typical" single-din depth. I know I managed to cram about a foot of wrapped extra RCA and wiring harness behind a single-din JVC, and it wasn't hard to do. There's not a "lot" of extra depth, but it's a fairly empty space around the stock radio.

 

USB is the way to go.. it rocks

Anybody have their p-201un pulled out sitting on a shelf just waiting to be measured?

Just if anyone needed to know, I opened up my dash and measured. The factory stereo is 7x7x4, almost the exact dimensions of the replacement I'll be using. So that's how much room we have back there.
