Subie/NonSubie OEM Stereos w/ Aux Input

ChE Outback XT

Recommended Posts

I have heard several people who are considering the LGT/OBXT list the lack of auxiliary input (esp. iPod) as a deal breaker. As much as I try to convince them to look past this and come to the Subie-side of life, I realize I'm missing a key piece of information: What does the competition look like?

Please post any information on 2005+ OEM stereo systems that have built in auxiliary inputs or easy quick fixes. (Cassette capable systems probably count as easy fixes.) I'm especially interested in LGT/OBXT comparable vehicles.

We have a 2005 Mini Cooper S - there are two options from the dealer. Full Ipod integration for $200 or a $40 AUX-In jack. We went the cheap route since an Ipod Shuffle doesn't have the dock connector necessary for the $200 piece. Since we have a NAV in that car too, some pin relocation was necessary to keep the 'voice-over' (not in the instructions BTW), but it wasn't hard.

P.S. I know this car isn't techinically competition for the LGT/OBXT, but it is in the same price category (Our MCS costs more than our LGT actually).

Well, I'm one of those waiting for an aux in. Actually, financial concerns have held me back more lately, but I would have probably bought a LGT Ltd wagon back in December if it weren't for the aux in issue. I'm currently thinking the JL Audio CleanSweep might handle my needs. But these days I'm starting to wonder whether the stock fuel economy is good enough for my needs. Too bad the Cobb Access Port doesn't have an "economy" mode yet.

A coworker bought a new Saab 93 Arc last fall. I believe it's a 2005 model. It's got an even more integrated dash system (controls are all over the place, with shared buttons and display). However, supposedly there is an OEM aux in adapter available for the Saabs. He is using an FM transmitter for his Sirius radio, but I think he intends to get the adapter at some point.

I think Subaru screwed folks over on this one. I already sent them an email telling them they should have left the stereo as a regular double-DIN or supplied an aux in. I'd encourage others to do the same (although I don't think Subaru really cares).

If Subie's got it wrong, who has it right?

It's not so much that many other cars have an aux. in, but rather that you can easily swap in an aftermarket deck for those that don't. If you're going to use an integrated system that can not be replaced you should at least be offering upgrades/options that allow for aux. in. Don't just eliminate the aftermarket, replace it with dealer options.

That's what I'm curious about... how many 2005's have easily-swappable decks?

I had an Acura TSX, you couldnt do anything with that as far as the dash was concerned because of the way it was molded, however luckily the space for the OEM mp3 player makes a nice home for a single din unit, it just looks kinda goofy cuz you have two stereo controls. But the good thing is because the acura is pre-wired for either the rear dvd entertainment system or the OEM mp3 player you can just get a converter and connect any line input device into it.

It would go underneath where the a/c controls are

Replacing a stereo in an A4 is pretty easy.. Impossible in the saab 9-3 its all intergrated into the dash.. and anybody who has seen the new volvo S40 knows that its impossible to swap out, however the factory system with the sub sounds quite tits http://a332.g.akamai.net/f/332/936/12h/www.edmunds.com//pictures/VEHICLE/2005/Volvo/100404427/033167-E.jpg
