hwang89 Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 I bumped into a curb and didn't think much of it. For the next month, the rear side begins "whurring"... and I didn't think much of it. I finally took it in for an inspection when I noticed that one tire kept losing air. Turns out the wheel was bent (slightly). I replaced the tire and drove about 1k miles over two days. I was paranoid about a breakdown, but nothing happened. - Do you think it's okay to remount that new tire from the bent wheel onto a new stock wheel? - Should I be worried about stress effects on the wheel bearing, etc. since that one wheel's been wobbling for quite a while? Thanks in advance
BrooklynBoy Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 Had a similar problem.......hit a crater on the highway that just appeared out of the darkness of hell........the wheel was so bent that it required air every day and a half. I did a local search for aluminum rim repair. Found a mobile service. We met the next day outside of a local tire shop. The shop took the tire off the rim. The wheel guy mounted my bent rim to a trueing spindle in the back of his truck. Using a center mounted vernier caliper he marked off the extents of the damaged area. He then heated that area with a blowtorch. When it was hot enough he used a hydrualic ram mounted between the spindle and the inside of the rim to push it back to where it should be. When the rim had cooled , he brought it back into the tire shop, they mounted and balanced it , and he put it back on my car. Total time......35 minutes. Total cost.....$100. The wheel has been straight and true for 3000 miles now. ( Saved me at least 320 bucks------a new spec B wheel costs 420 ) I wouldn't worry too much about your bearing if it's not making noise. (And our wheel bearings are warrantied for 100k miles) Do it right the first time.........or don't bother doing it at all.
hwang89 Posted June 30, 2010 Author Posted June 30, 2010 Haha wow... that sounds like a perfect fix for my wheel. I probably should have waited a bit before buying a wheel from the forums. I suppose now I'll have an extra wheel lying around. My car is on its 110k mile now, so I'm getting paranoid about everything. It's old!
BrooklynBoy Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 With 110k , your car isn't even middle-aged ! . Do it right the first time.........or don't bother doing it at all.
