EJ20T Opinions

I was going to originally turbo the N/A EJ22 (which still may happen) on low boost. But now I see I can get an EJ20T from

Has no ECU so I would have to find one. Any other complications I would have to look at?

Regardless of what motor I use the car will get a manual trans down the road (8-10 months) or sooner if it doesn't hold. So I was going to do bigger brakes, rims/tires and motor then the tranny.

What are my tranny options for when I start looking for a 5 speed?

Yeah hoping to spend about 1100ish on the trans when the time comes. So would I just need the ECU (doesn't the ECU's have the wiring harness on them anyways?) Just pricing things out.

put rims and tires off and get the engine work DONE otherwise your pulling it all out again and its gonna cost you more

If I put that kind of power on the piece of shit $200 tires I have on there I WILL NOT stop.

Engine work? I think I am just swapping. There is no WORK to be redone because it will NOT be rebuilt.

Just to chime in your 4EAT is the same found in a WRX.

Your 4EAT is just as strong as a 5spd WRX trans. Your 4EAT will probably outlast a WRX 5spd glass trans.

Your rear diff is the same as a WRX.. R160 minus the vlsd and different gear ratio.

The only reason you get a new trans with the engine is to swap to a 5spd manual conversion. Otherwise if your getting another auto they are essentially all the same. They just have different ratios 3.90 4.11 4.44.

Personally, keep your stock auto and rear and just put in the motor.. ALSO since your swapping it would be a great idea to drop $550(equivalent to a clutch upgrade) on a torque converter from IPT (just in case you put a 20G turbo later on) bolt it in since the trans is already separated from the engine. Enjoy chirping gears.

Let me also point out.. rebuilding or beefing up a subaru manual transmission is $$$$. Over $3000

Swapping a USED 94-05 5spd from non turbo subaru is $1200+

Swapping a USED WRX 5spd is $2000+

Swapping a USED STi 6spd is $3500+ <---I wouldn't even bother with this

It's no joke. I thought of it already. My WRX swap with stock GT 4EAT and rear gives me NO issues at 18psi but I'm about to cage my car and get more serious with it, so I'm needing a manual transmission. It does not look good $$ wise.

What do you mean enjoy chirping gears? lol scaring me here man!

Chirping gears mean the IPT TC will shift hard because of reduced slip like power shifting a manual transmission from 1st to 2nd gear at WOT thus causing breaking traction on tires inducing a "chirp".. get it?
