BileHazard
I have a 2008 Legacy. What is your take on the hood protector. Do you like or dislike the look of it. In Colorado, we use a lot of sand on our roads so basically everybody here has cracked windshields and rock chips on our front ends of our vehicles. I'm thinking of either going the clear bra or hood protector route. The clear bra is more "permanent" where as the hood protector isn't. Just not sure of the look. Kylar
CT Roads are pretty bad too, I was thinking about getting one myself. Maybe we can get some people to post pics. I'll do a search and if i find some i'll post them up
Kylar
Best pic i could find. My car is black so i dont think it would be as noticeable. http://subarucarrparts.com/store/image/owvc/149_Air_Bug_Dust_Deflectors_FORESTER_HOOD_DEFLECTOR.jpg

BileHazard
Yeah, with black its not so bad. I have QSM so it will be more noticeable. Any thoughts on installation. Does it pretty much just "snap" on
Mark34
There are a few screws you need to replace under the center part of the hood that hold the shield to the weatherseal, four clips that get screwed on, and some rubber bumpers and clear tape so that the shield doesn't hit against the hood. Pretty easy install, probably 30 minutes. If you're feeling adventurous and have some $$$, you can get different colored ones from Japan. http://www.japanparts.com/db/parts_detail.php?NUMBER=00022925&VOLUME=004-039-001&DEALER=1&CAR=141&MIDDLE=2&SMALL=8&MAKER=49&VOLKEY=&SEARCH_DEALER=1&SEARCH_CAR=141&SEARCH_MIDDLE=2&SEARCH_SMALL=8&SEARCH_MAKER=&SEARCH_VOLKEY=&SEARCH_page=&submit.x=36&submit.y=
Gire
I might have considered it if I bought a black or navy Legacy. I don't like how they stand out on lighter colours though.
Max Capacity
Spend the money and do the 3M clear tape. I have found the plastic ones tend to not like going to fast...triple digit's. Oh Yea, put the 3M tape down by the front of the rear wheel openings. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). I would go with the clear bra. No offense but that looks hideous, belongs on a 80's car Not to mention they can be harsh on the paint if any dust/dirt/debris gets trapped underneath. F-WDC Spec B
^ if you track at all it would def be better than a clear bra or painters tape.
Kylar
^ if you track at all it would def be better than a clear bra or painters tape. Throwing it on for track is a different story, hence the reason people use ugly blue painters tape. Looks dont matter as long as it protects the paint. I really dont think thats what he meant. SUBACHEVROMAN
i personally prefer the vinyl over plastic shield..the plastic bug shields in here belong on trucks and suvs..they compliment those imo...on a car they are outta place a bit..on my black car this vinyl protector would look good, especially with legacy centered on it..but cant find one..no biggie i guess, but really wanted the chips covered..ive heard this before, and im starting to believe it, the paint on these cars is terrible..it marks and chips very easy..i actually scratched the paint on the roof side rail above pass door by shammy drying the car! i thought for sure there was a small rock or something on shammy but i didnt find anything..the darn touch up paint i ordered isnt even a good match..not happy with paint...as far as the vinyl protector causing damage, they can if you dont remove them and clean periodically, BUT so can the bug shields ruin your car too if you dont clean and remove debris from out behind them..just not sure what im gonna do now..im all for the protection, living on a bcak dirt road, my cars gonna take a beating.. shralp
+1 for Clear Bra, its the least intrusive looking and protects well. Of course if you don't do it over an immaculate paint job then its not nearly as worth it. I had a rattle trap mid-80's Nissan blow its entire rear window out in front of me on I-5. It flew like a potato chip until touching down 30 feet in front of me before shattering into a million pieces. Insurance painted the entire front clip and hood so I figured it was a good time to do it. Worth every penny.
Mark34
A couple of these steps might be slightly out of order, but should give a good idea. I'm going from memory here; installed this 2 years ago...
Max Capacity
You can do all you want...if you drive the car on the highway your going to get ding's in the paint. I have about 5 or 6 up on the hood by the scoop. So no matter what you do short of covering the whole front end, don't forget the mirrors, your going to get nicks in the paint. Oh don't forget the front edge of the roof. Hey it's not a show car. It's a subaru, drive it. Oh yea, don't forget to cover the inside of the scoop. mine has very little paint left on the bottom edge of it. 126,000 miles. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs.
