94 Legacy 2.2 with random overheating issue

Recommended Posts

Ok, I'm lost on this. I bought a 94 legacy with a 2.2l DOHC engine last summer. Runs great, doesn't smoke, awesome little car. The previous owner had some random overheating issues, thus she put a new radiator in it and the issue seemed to go away.

I put several thousand miles on it with out having any overheating issues... then suddenly this winter she overheated and blew coolant out of the overflow. I had both head gaskets replaced and the thermastat replaced and have put maybe 1000 miles on it since with no problems, then last night, bam... she overheats... I watched my temp gauge climb and climb. I noticed from the start that my heater wasn't putting out hot air a few blocks from work like she should be... I knew I was going to have problems at that point. Does this sound like air in the system or could there be other things causing this? HELP! I'm torn between selling the car (although I love it) and rooting the issue out.

I had a garage replace the thermastat, I'm sure it is typical napa parts, you would think their stats would be oem. It was doing this before I replaced the thermostat too.

For some reason our motors hate anything but an OEM thermostat. I will take pictures of a napa one vs. the OEM one. The OEM is like 3 times larger. Ask the garage what thermostat they used to replace yours. Or if you can't get a hold of them then pull it out and compare it to the pictures I will post for you later today.

Not true, I have a napa one in my 2.2 and it's running fine knock on wood. But everywhere I've heard subaru ejs have trouble with anything but oem thermostats. my money's on an air bubble: from the front of the car looking to the left of the radiator, there should be a black plastic plug that has a philips head on it. unscrew that, and start filling coolant from the radiator cap side (on the right). if everything goes right, you should see coolant start to come up through the plug side to the very top (given that you had an air pocket in the system). hopefully that's all it is!

You are special Kaz haha. Here are some pictures of the OEM vs carquest thermostats.

You tell me which one you thing will work better. Hint the OEM one is the bigger one.;)

The part number is 21200AA072. Make sure you get the gasket for it too. I don't have that part number though.

it'd be worth the $13 to make sure everything's all set. I'd rather not get involved with a job like that again if I didn't have to, you know? mine had better not fail after this post haha, I'd be really pissed!
