Aric3320
I have a 98' 2.21 legacy. My friend gave me this car when she moved to Hawaii and I feel like making it go faster. My friend and I are tampering with the idea of boosting it for shits and giggles. We will probably pull a turbo out of the junkyard from a Volvo or something, weld up a manifold and run it till she blows. It has 140k and is still running strong. FYI my friend has a 94' RX7 built and boosted pushing over 450hp, we are both mechanically inclined, can weld anything and not afraid of a challenge. I have looked around the internet and cannot find much info regarding this matter. Any pointers or experience info would be appreciated. Thanks, Aric

Bassnectar
if you run boost past like 8, it will blow quick unfortunately NA ej22s and ej25s dont like being boosted. but the 2.2 likes it a little better as ive seen a few setups. If you want the motor to last you need to build it up internally, but on low boost it should be okay for awhile, just make sure you get your worth out of the car and not have it blowup after only a week
kaz98gt
+1 if you wanna build it up and throw a little more money into it, you'll have a reliable and powerful 2.2 (I'm jealous a little ). I'm trying to find a link over on sl-i.net because I remember seeing a build thread there...
Baddog
This is what I want to do as well but I don't think the AUTO will hold up If anyone knows if it will or not let me know.
ineedmorepsi
I knew someone who turboed a 97 OB impreza 2.2L 4EAT stock motor, wrx td04 and 75shot of nitrous tuned on safc. He street raced, drag strip and DD it. Ran 13s and never blew up for 2 years . This was 7+ years ago. White OB impreza with 2 black racing stripes. found old a$$ videos of it from philly streetracing.org days. go on youtube type outback impreza turbo look should see the car in the thumbnails. or http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=turbo+outback+impreza&aq=f

It will, mine transfers the power from wrx engine@18.5psi to sticky 225 tires. No slipping whether in D or manual shifting. Never neutral drop an auto transmission, you instead brake boost it. Looks like this is my next project. What parts would I need and what would the cost be roughly if I got everything used for a low price? Ineedpepsi or if anyone knows please shoot me a PM with information you can give me/parts/pricing. I should also ask if this is able to be done since I have an SOHC. Wouldn't I need DOHC headers? iluvdrt
This is what I want to do as well but I don't think the AUTO will hold up If anyone knows if it will or not let me know. The 4EAT is the same tranny in the 4 spd auto WRX's. It will hold fine up to about 300WHP. The trans is really a beast. Be sure to install an additional tranny cooler though. They are a very cheap ins. FWIW if your 2.2 has the dual port exhaust heads you can use factory wrx parts to boost it, straight off the wrx. You will need the turbo water pump and x member though. The maifold will not clear the NA waterpumps on our models, and the x member will not clear the up pipe..or you can cut a notch in it.

Good to know the trans is a beast. I have beat on it quite hard and no metal shavings. So what if my 2.2 has the Single port exhaust heads what can I do? So far for the list would be WRX Turbo WRX Crossmember WRX Water Pump WRX Manifold (the top spider looking part right?)
Bassnectar
ya the auto trans i believe is the same on use in the subaru svx which had a 3.3 litre H6, so if it can handle that it should hold a wrx decent
Baddog
Yeah I am excited. I just now need to know what parts exactly to get. I have the 01/96 production EJ22E legacy. It is a SOHC. I can't find much information.
ineedmorepsi
many people who turbo use 2.5 sohc heads on ej22 block.
Baddog
This is where I get lost. What are heads? Headers? I keep googling how to turbo an EJ22E and really can't find anything. Nor can I find pricing.
Baddog
Pepsi if you know what I would need and a rough esimate shoot me a PM!
amp27
you shouldnt be turboing your car if you dont know what headers are.
Baddog
You should shut up. Headers are part of the exhaust. What I meant is head. Thanks anyways

amp27
o. well you also wrote headers. or were you asking if heads meant headers? in which case they dont. heads are ..well part of the motor. not the outer most plate on head side of the engine(the the cam cover i think) the heads are the second piece in. at least this is what i think. i may be completely wrong as i have never had my car apart or done that much of in depth work on my motor. how am i a ricer. i never assume my car is fast or wanna make it fast looking. i was just lucky enough to get a GT instead of a lesser L. if me having a gt makes me rice in your mind you got major mental issues. you could solve these buy buying a gt and posting on legacyGT.com
amp27
sorry that was harsh. all subarus are welcomed here. but really dude. your like i when i first got my car. asking asking asking away. yes this is what you need to do but you can also do a ton of reading. I keep googling how to turbo an EJ22E and really can't find anything. Nor can I find pricing. ^^this is not how you will turbo your car. its very hard to learn everything you need to know over the internet. you'll never have the hands on and human contact needed to fully understand something specialized, such as a Subaru

amp27
no. like i meant you cant learn everything with google. you'll never have the hand on experience. you can learn anything but not fully until you do it. **** up. and do it again. thats why im so good at being a smart ass
Baddog
Made my mistakes on the car. If there is a DIY then I can do it my self. I normally just need a part list and what not. I am just looking for more out of the car and turboing it would really be a dream come true. Then later down the road would be a WRX swap. Way later down the road
amp27
then if you need you motor to last way down the road you shouldn't just slap some forced induction on a stock engine.
Baddog
I have heard of people being fine with low boost.
