When replacing with the stock brake pads with Hawk aftermarket pads, do you keep the inner shim (the middle one in the picture)?

The only other thread I found was this one:

Which seemed to have my same problem. What is the purpose of the inner shim if we can go without it?

I tried to check with Hawk just to be sure as well, and just got this response:

Scott –

The shim we put on our pads is designed to run by itself. You could put the outer OE shim on but it might make noise. A lot of times the OE will put multiple shims on to try and turn that specific brake pad. Our shims are a single layer of steel with rubber bonded on each side for insulating and noise reduction.

Thanks,
