sic GT
This thread is the sequel to my original "Bizzare 5EAT after reflash thread" After 1.5 weeks of working with my local Subaru dealer being unable to find the cause of my 5EATs' crazy shifting behavior, the service advisor now is relaying info from the head Subaru techs in NJ it is now believed that my valve body must be replaced to resolve the issue at a cost of 1400.00 for the install. My car is at almost 65k miles and I am not sure if Subaru will even cover any of the costs associated with this. I did a search and found no relevant threads of other 5EAT owners having their valve body fail in any capacity other than the inherent slow mushy shift that is common to the 5EAT. I just took out a loan to do my Masters and this comes at a horrible time. I also spoke breifly with Ty at IPT and he has not rebuilt any valve body that was deemed malfunctioning by SubaruUSA in his time working on Subaru transmissions. Anybody have this type of experience with Subaru or otherwise? Thanks.
atc5
buy the floating VB in the classifieds, install it, and be done. much less expensive option for you. haven't seen an instance of one of these failing yet.
fishbone
A new VB will run about $700 at the dealer. Buy the part and have another shop install it for cheaper. I paid less than 1400 when I had my valve body modified and this included $220 shipping both ways, dropping it and installing it back in, plus tranny fluid to the tune of 8 quarts or so. Should you feel brave enough to try this, there is a DIY thread here on how to take the valve body out and replace it.
sic GT
Just heard back from Subaru. They will cover the cost of the valve body and install totaling $1482.00 if I pick up a $250.00 deductible. Seem fair considering I am modified and 5.4K out of the factory warranty. I guess no IPT VB mod for me now. I didn't really have the money for that anyway. I hope Subaru will let me keep the old VB so I can have IPT modify down the road when I have the necessary funds. fishbone
Ask that they give it to you up front.
sic GT
New valve body will be installed this week by Ganley Imports in North Olmstead. Subaru will not let me keep old VB. They say it needs to be returned to SOA for research. Was hoping to send to IPT for a rebuild eventually. At least the car will shift right again. Trans. cooler will be ordered this week. Subaru told me they won't install the cooler. Can anybody recommend a place to have it installed in the Cleve. area as I don't really have a warm garage to work on this? Thanks. fishbone
Shouldn't they be giving you some sort of refund for them keeping the defective core?
AKLGT
pretty sure them covering the VB and install with only a $250 deductible is the refund. and not uncommon for SOA requiring a part for them to look at. I've had to send a few parts from my old 05 LGT to them due to the wheel bearing and hub issues. Wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle yeah!!!
