Custom Magnaflow Axleback Questions

I'm looking for a relatively quiet and inexpensive exhaust setup. Here's some criteria i'm looking for:

1. My car had the Evo2 catback on it when I bought it, which I sold + traded for stock because I didn't like the huge cans. I did like the sound, though, and wouldn't mind the same level and quality of sound again. Maybe a little quieter, though.

2. Currently running "Stage 1" hogzaust. I like the volume, but i'd like to change the tone and have all my exhaust coming out of the tip rather than under the car :-)

3. I want a relatively quiet exhaust; no louder than the hogzaust and Evo2. Outside volume is fine with me, but inside drone is not.

4. Ability to de-mod. I would prefer to have a setup that makes it easy to remove and return to stock. This isn't a requirement, but more of a preference in case I decide to make changes in the future.

5. I'm going mainly for look/sound, but some extra power would be nice.

I have been leaning toward a custom Magnaflow axle-back exhaust, so that I can keep the factory resonator (to quiet things down) and keep costs low by using the existing piping.

I have searched around and found two options:

1. Mufflers installed with flanges to bolt to the existing y-pipe extensions. I figure this will run about $375 installed, including buying new flanges. This way, I can keep my stock mufflers intact. However, the 1 1/2" piping won't produce a very deep sound.

2. Mufflers installed with 2 1/4" piping to where the y-pipe splits, welded on. This won't be easily removed and will make it so that I can't return to stock without finding another y-pipe to trade. But the wider diameter will deepen the sound and provide better flow. Don't know how much more this will cost, but I imagine more than the first idea.

Any thoughts on this? Other ideas?

to get more power...really you'll need 3" piping from the turbo - back. that's why they are called turbo back exhausts (downpipe and catback).

i could be wrong but i dont think you'd gain noise from piping size, i know for sure you'd get more/different sound from the mufflers you choose.

with wanting something that just bolts on to the stock exhausts.. well..that is custom work. but that amount you are estimating... you could probably pick up a complete catback system in the classifieds for a few hundred dollars more.

being stage 1....then...i think your choices would be the cobb exhaust or the borla (for sure will fit).

im also thinkin of just piecin a magnaflow cat back together... im running a muffler delete now and its not bad but i love the sound of the magnaflow CBE... im thinking just run 3" from the DP (ERZ Catted) all the way to the y then taper that to like 2.5" or so for the muffler inlets... the magnaflow CBE shouldnt be anything special i think the sound should be almost identical

i've been looking towards swapping off my stock exhaust as well. i have a 3" DP running to stock thereafter. im more interest in going 3" to the tip and dropping the 2nd ppe. so 3" in a single exit, quiet but noticable rumbles. any ideas?

id say just buy a magnaflow muffler off summit racing and just get a exhaust shop to replicate your stock exhaust bends with the 3" i wouldnt mind a single exit as well but i think 1 muffler with 2 cut outs might not look good

i kinda felt the same way about 2 cutouts and 1 pipe but the single pipe will save a little weight and the 2nd pipe is known to cause an unecessary back pressure effect. the invidia quads are pretty mean looking so i;ve been reconsidering

i built a custom 3" catback exhaust using a 3" magnaflow were the resonator was, then just 3" pipe put the back into 2 tips...i think it sounds awesome....it's not loud at all....no drone...unfortunately no clips, it's at the dealer gettin some warranty work done, and i have to finish up the second side of the Y and bring it out to the bumper...i threw the stock exhaust setup on for the trip to the dealer. once wrapped up i will get some sound clips

Sound clips would be great!

Here's mine: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mvx0hadlDTM]YouTube- Legacy GT - custom magnaflow exhaust[/ame]

only parts left stock in the exhaust system are the mid/y. I feel that this helps keep noise down and eliminate drone. Its a very subdued setup.

here's another clip a little closer up, but you can hear the mic popping a lot:

Which Magnaflow mufflers are you using?

these:[ame=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A8OQ6G/]Amazon.com: MagnaFlow 14225 Stainless Steel 2.25" Oval Muffler: Automotive[/ame]

more details on the axleback here: http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122627&highlight=s2000

welds were crappy, but it bolted up which is nice in case I ever want want to put the stockers or something different on.

I have the complete Magnaflow CBE. It has no resonator. On a scale of 1 - 10 it is about a 4. Louder than an SPT, but quieter than a Greddy or Perrin. HAs a nice low deep rumble. Crone is present, but bearable. This is was a stock DP.

I have an AVO DP on order with a custom 3 in cat, it is full 3 inch DP, and ordered up an adapter from Fred Beans so it mates with the Magnaflow, and I can tell you its going to sound awesome.
