Knocking front end noise (cold)

My car has developed a nasty knocking noise lately, here are the symptoms....

-has just started since the weather turned cold (-30 C)

-happens slow speed turns either direction, as well as when the car is parked and the wheel is turned side to side(not a cv joint..)

-is not consistent, does not happen every turn, or ever steering-wheel spin back and forth, but frequently enough

-not a load transfer single knock, more of a knock-knock-knock-knock(sounds similar to a CV on the way out, but is impossible as it makes the same noise whilst parked)

-goes away once the car is warm/driven for a bit (more than my 4km commute)

iON springs, stock struts...

Anything I should look at here? Is this just a symptom of this frigid weather? (I've learned very quickly this is not a cold weather car...)

I'm thinking perhaps the strut mounts/center bolt may not be as tight as they should be, and the cold weather has amplified this fact, perhaps some bushing or mount needs some lube?

Any experience, suggestions?

Played around with a few things today, its just too cold to stay out there for any length of time (-44 with windchill tonight)

No play in the wheels up or down, or side to side. Lower contol arm bushing look good (not torn or popping out). Steering feel is still razor sharp.

Struts are packed full of snow and ice, need to get rid of this before anything...

I think I may have misdagnosed the noise, i drove around aimlessly trying to duplicate the noise, it's not so much a knock as much as a groan ish rattle (if that makes sense) type noise, heard under acceleration on turns, not braking or easy (normal turns), only when you get on it in either direction, but I think its more coming from the left side.

What it kinda sounds like is something to do with the pump or rack...the closest dealer is 5 hours away, however I am going to that city and flying out for a week on wednesday so I might get them to take a look at it while I'm gone...

Thanks for the help, one thing I didn't check was the lug nuts (duh) so I'll try a few more things tomorrow.

I got the same symptoms! Only when is -25C and colder (we already had -32C here. I had my car inspected last winter (drove around in similar conditions with technician) & they said 'it's a traction control working'. They said even with VDC off you cannot defeat system completely. I say 'BS' because there's no noise when warmer even on pure ice/snow. One day we'll have to get some answers. Those noises are not normal. My gues it is something with steering of course (freeze up).
