DaveZ
I have rallitek springs & bilsteins on my '06 leggy (yes even though it is just a 2.5i) and it's been great to drive but I'm feeling I'd like some more power and maybe a bigger back seat...so either a new GT or an old BMW 5 is in my future. I know you can't expect to get your cost back out fo an aftermarket setup. However, is it a liability for a trade-in to have aftermarket? Are dealers leery of that? Got an aftermarket radio int here too. Have all the original parts, so it's just time & trouble to return to stock.
dwolson2
I "think" it depends on the state, I heard that CA it must be stock for a dealer to sell it, but I don't know how stock it must be. Emissions... etc. If nothing else just put your stock parts back in and sell your aftermarket parts on here.
whitetiger
the aftermarket parts wont account for any value for a dealer trade in, sell the mods and go back to stock to get the most for your money.

LosAngelesLGT
WHEN IN DOUBT... STOCK IT OUT! I can tell you what the laws are like here, but I cannot speak for any state outside mine as I have only SOLD cars in California. In California, even in a private party sale, the seller is required, by law, to have a current smog check/emissions on the vehicle. This is not a current registration, that is a given (or a non-operational) but actually go and RE-SMOG the vehicle to sell it; it is the burden of the seller to sell a smog/emissions legal vehicle. This allows the new owner a "free" pass (purchased by the seller) for smog check/emissions to re-register the car in their name. This is just for private party! Based on this, I would bet a few Benjies that if a dealer were to sell a non-smog legal car in CA, in MOST cases they could get fined. Hope this info helped some. Rutchard
Wait, so a car won't pass smog with aftermarket struts and springs in CA?
DaveZ
yeah I think the smog is OK...no changes to engine or exhaust. Back to stock it is....
ClimberDHexMods
Wait, so a car won't pass smog with aftermarket struts and springs in CA? technically speaking, anything aftermarket fails the visual inspection. That said, I grew up in SF where modified hondas and acuras are ubiquitous. It's really all about the guy at the inspection station. just check first. LosAngelesLGT
Wait, so a car won't pass smog with aftermarket struts and springs in CA? WTH? Springs have NOTHING to do with the exhaust/emissions system. Basically ANYTHING attached to the engine CAN cause it to fail a smog check if it is not CARB stickered in CA. That could be a homemade RAM INTAKE if the guy at the smog shop is a big enough jerk. Keep in mind that if you roll in with your modified car, the shop guy is taking a risk. If he doesn't notice something wrong visually and passes you, they could be fined (probably a substantial amount). LALGT

I only asked because the OP only said he had aftermarket springs and struts on the car, then you went into a spiel about CA smog testing and how a modified car won't pass smog and can't be sold. LosAngelesLGT
there's a reason I take CA investor money and invest it in NOT CA. Darn these TX smog laws too... oh wait... Wait, seriously? TX has enforced smog laws??? I am asking out of ignorance-I don't know but I guess, I assumed (being from Cali and all) that the George Bushian great land of cattle, guns and oil (with the biggest people in the country) would be all good with a little power upgrade!!! Seriously... EVERYTHING IS BIG IN TEXAS! (Including HORSEPOWER??) So... If we can't go to TX, where exactly do we have to go to be an insane gearhead and not get harassed? What is the best state to be a gearhead? (Sorry for the thread hyjack)

What is the best state to be a gearhead? (Sorry for the thread hyjack) I live in Nebraska and never get harrassed. But who wants to move here anyway. We do have corn, though. Anyway, try negotiating a better offer with the upgraded suspension. If they don't bite, take it home and revert back to stock like everyone else said. Worst they can do is refuse. Otherwise, +1 on what E-Tank suggested. If you want to put in a little extra time for a little extra coin, sell privately. You will definitely get more than a trade-in and the shopper will get a better deal than full retail that they'd pay at a dealer. Win-win.
ClimberDHexMods
Was being sarcastic. TX doesn't really care about smog that much. The issue is I found the only guy in town who cares, but if it's not obvious then it's fine in general here. There are a lot of souped up modern muscle cars here. Corvettes and Mustangs are everywhere... I know what to look for just like you guys do, I know that turbo or supercharger sound and the exhaust sound when something's going on, and it's all over here. When a house costs 100k and you make the same money as the guy in California, where do you spend you money next? Car.
