E-Tank
My clutch slipped this morning on the way to work. I was in 5th gear under boost and it jumped from 3500 to 4500 rpm. My car has 58k and I've been stage 2 for 9k miles. Called the local stealership just for kicks and the fuxers quoted me 750 labor and told me if I sourced OEM parts that they wouldn't warranty them. "You have to buy the parts from us for warranty," they said....Bastards. Thank gawd I'm plugged into the mn scooby community. A tech on my forum will do the install for $300. Freddy Beans has a OEM clutch and WRX flywheel for like $550. By my calculations that's a f*** of a lot less that the $1500+ the stealer wants. Questions... How long do you think I can limp the car around before it starts slipping in lower gears and becomes undriveable? Should I look into an aftermarket clutch or just stick OEM? How many miles were you mugs at when you got the slips?
tjbev21
as long as you get all the oem clutch parts, no matter were you get them from as long as they are subaru oem and brand new in box, subaru will cover that under warranty... if not call SOA... matter of fact, nvm no warranty that i ever heard of covers clutch replacement so you might want to see wat they are talking about

My experience with dealership service departments, and with dealers in general, has been horrible. I am potentially going to pay 1/2 the stealers quote and deal with some one who will treat me like a human being.
RdiggA
^^ why not upgrade the clutch so you dont have to worry about every having problems again. And for the piece of mind it'll be fine if you ever decide to get a bigger turbo.

JoeFromPA
Just my thoughts on this: Plenty of members with basic stage 2 running the stock clutch for a very long time No matter what, use the opportunity to upgrade to the TSK3 TO bearing if you plan on keeping the car for 50k more (just my opinion) Once you switch to the WRX clutch and SM flywheel, a new clutch becomes a cheaper affair. You can continue running a clutch that slips in 5th gear for 10k miles or ruin it tomorrow. The best way to maximize it's life is to avoid slippage at all costs. The slipping itself is what wears down the clutch or continues it's surface glazing. You want a nice rough surface
KartRacerBoy
E-Tank, how do you drive the car? My 05 LGT 5mt has 81k on it, and stage 2 since 15k. I autox it 4-6 times a year. Stock clutch with (I'd say) 10-20k miles to go. Do you hammer your car on a daily basis? I drive like a grandma on the street as evidenced by my 65k miles on my STi Brembos and only half through the pads and rotors.
tjbev21
^good example of someone that knows how to handle and MT car.. IMO (im the same way lol) 77k stock clutch
johnAWD
My '05 still on the original stock clutch at 56k miles, and the car is making ~400 awhp / ~400 ft/lbs. Needless to say I don't launch the car, and the clutch is feeling worn, but it's still holding the torque. If you don't plan on making decent power, stick with the stock parts. tjbev21
not bashing on your driving etank... alot of ppl just complain that the clutch is weak... which i wont argue with its not the best out of the factory but it does its purpose until stage 2.5/stage

I drive like a grandma on the street as evidenced by my 65k miles on my STi Brembos and only half through the pads and rotors. I've only had the car since 46k. The previous owner could have treated her a lot better (cigarette burn in headliner, front bumper and hood were replaced at some point, there is a body repair on the rear quarter). Basically I searched for an LGT with under 50k for under 13.5 for four months and I found this one on the other side of the country at a dealer. Said dealer presented me with carfax and assured me the car was minty. I flew and picked it up and have been finding out more and more in th etime I've owned it. Lesson learned. Never trust a dealer. The car has run wondefully and has treated me very well. The clutch will be the first money put into the car other than maintainance and mods. I was going to have to replace it at some point, so I'm really not sore. Ya gotta pay to play. To answer your question I have always driven MT cars. I probably engage in an "above average" amount of spirited driving, but I certainly don't beat on my car. I am going to push blame onto previous owner here.
