Questions about my baby

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I have an 05 legacy GT. I bought it brand new, it has about 110K miles. I just bought new tires, Cooper Zeon ZPT... had them mounted and balanced a few days ago. My car has been making a low vibrational sound. Not in the steering wheel tho, but something def doesn't sound right. So, did the mechanics screw up when they balanced the tires? And somehow have 1 lug nut missing.... ALSO, ever since my E brake light is on. I tried to fool around with the brake, but the light still stays on.

The mechanics said I need new brakes and rotors, umm i doubt i need new rotors. Theres no grooves or anything, they look the way they did the day I brought the car home.

So, can anyone recommend a good set of brakes?

Any ideas about my tire problem?

And why is my E brake light always on?

1. be more specific about when you feel the vibration. you need to start ruling stuff out. So if you have a lug nut missing than this clearly could be part of your problem.

2. you have 110k on the car. why would you not need new brakes and rotors? have you replaced the rotors since you've owned the car? Warped rotors could also be contributing to your vibration issue.

At 110k if you are going for new pads I'd be putting rotors on too.

nope, all of these problems are new.

well, i assumed a piece of steel wouldn't warp that fast, but if you say it's possible then I'll have it lookd at some where else. I brought it to a Jeep/chrysler dealership because it was close by. And since these problems all started the day I got my car back from them, my trust in these people has severly diminished. Hence, why I'm not completely down with spending 800 for new rotors and brakes from these guys.

So, I noticed a very low vibrational sound coming from the back end of the car. When I go over 50 it's quite noticeable. And when I slow down from like 60 or so that's when I notice it the most. My brother drove it and he checked the wheels and said there are no weights on the wheels. My dad said the weights could be on the inside or something. And why they forgot to put the last lug nut in is beyond me. There are 5 lug nuts, so could the balance be thrown off by only one missing?

now, could they have tripped a wire or something like that while they were installing my tires/ or checking my brakes to make my E brake light stay on?

I had a similar problem when I put new tires on an old honda of mine. After putting them on I discovered a bad "humming" noise as my speed increased. Sounded almost like an exhaust leak, but I ruled that out as the noise level was related to the speed I was going and not the speed of the engine.

On my second rotation i was told that I had a bent rim! I think this is what was causing the noise--grease monkey probably dropped my wheel when they were mounting the tires.

I didn't bother to fix it because I sold the car, but I'm pretty sure that was what was causing the noise in my car.

You might want to get your wheels checked soon as who ever mounted your tires wont give a crap if you come back saying they bent your wheel and it's been a while...

dude. you have 110k on your stock rotors. depending on what type of driving you do daily it is possible. I drive 60miles a day and had to replace mine at around 90k. However if all these problems started after you got it back than that would be the last thing to rule out.

which wheel is missing the lug nut? And yes, wheel weights are not put on the outside of the rims. they are usually flats weights stuck to the inside of the wheel itself. Or they are stuck to the lip on the inside of the wheel.

if they are stuck to the lip on the inside of wheel, and it's fallen off (which as happened to me) tell them to use the kind that is flat and sticks on the wheel itself.

as for the e-brake, I don't know. sounds like you have an incompetant shop
