oil change woe

Hey,

 

Have any of you had the front differential oil drained during an oil change?

 

The first time it was no big deal, the manager caught it by the smell because he was in the pit. I went to another oil change place today and they did it again. This time though I drove it about 25 miles before I figured it out. No damage apparent, I put in the gear oil myself at that point.

 

Of course that means they added oil to the engine that it didn't need, and the oil is off the top of the stick. I'll fix that in the morning.

 

I called the shop and explained it, I was mad, but because I knew what it was I was able to catch it before any permanent damage was done. They were very apologetic, and I appreciate that. Someone is going to learn to sniff the fluid from now on I guess.

 

I've had three different Subies before, two Imprezzas and this Legacy. Never had the problem before. I have had a couple of other all wheel drive cars and never had the problem. I was just wondering if Mississippi oil change places are the only place this happens or am I just lucky?

Wait, so you are saying they drained the diff. oil instead of the engine oil???

 

How is it even possible they could mix these two up, they aren't even relatively close to each other, and hell one is UNDER the damn engine, and the other is not. They didn't realize not even 2 quarts came out of the drain? Stay the hell away from where ever you are going, that's for sure.

I realize in Miss. there probably aren't many Subaru dealerships, so maybe you want to draw a huge yellow arrow on the bottom of your oil pan so the next retard knows what plug to take out.

That's part of the reason subaru switched to the giant T70 torx for the front diff...to keep the confusion to a minimum. Not sure if the 3.0R has the same or not....
+1, happens ALL the time at chain oil change places.

The boxer engine layout also contributes to the pre-HS graduate "technician" confusion.

Best solution, change it yourself if at all possible... ;)

25 miles with zero gear oil? :eek: Did you visually inspect the gears and bearings, because I predict you will need a premature replacement of both. At the very least get a UOA done on the gear oil, and look at how much iron has collected on your magnetic drain plug. And get something in writing from the shop about the mistake they made.

I'd say that the useful operating life of your front diff has been shortened considerably. 25 miles of operation "dry" is bad.

 

Also, 25 miles of operation with an overfilled crankcase is also bad, I'm sure that oil has been whipped up into a nice foamy cappucino.

lucky you didn't get on it and push the cam seals out the front of the motor, with all that extra oil. Don't ask, I know this by experience on my 92 Leg sport. $1100 oops on my mistake of overfilling the motor by 3 quarts. I'd follow the advice, get a written acknowledgement by the shop of what they did, and didn't do, get it thoroughly checked out for your long term future enjoyment of your LGT for many years down the road. That's cause they didn't have a tech do it so they didn't have to pay flat rate. Some 7 dollar an hour lot guy changed your oil. It's a common practice. Watch out.
