Boost Leak danger?

So I took my TMIC (stock) off over the weekend to track down recent increase in oil consumption- there was oil in it and I will be swapping the turbo due to the leaky oil seal.

During my inspection I noticed a sizeable hole(about the diameter of a pencil) in the back of the intercooler, I am not sure how long it has been there or how it got there. Strangely, I have still been hitting target boost levels. I also cant hear the leak for some reason which also helps explain why I never noticed it. So this may have been like this for some time. I have a replacement tmic on the way and will put it on along w/ my spare turbo asap.

My question is- could this hole have caused any ill effect on the engine? I suppose it has caused the engine to run rich? If it has been weeks or months like this what could the effects be? I havent done a LV or log in a while- I suppose I will do that soon. If I stay out of boost is it ok to continue driving until I get my replacement?

A boost leak post maf could cause the engine to run rich, metered air is escaping before the combustion chamber, so you have less air and more fuel. It can also cause the turbo to run out of it's efficiency range b/c it has to pull in more air than normal to maintain the same boost targets. This could mean a hotter charge and the potential for knock.

If you fix everything and the car still runs fine, I doubt you have any long term damage. You'd have noticed anything major already --however you may want to reset the ecu when you install the new tmic so that all of the values are re-learned.

Thanks for the replys, both good tips. Definately a ecu reset upon tmic replacment. I'll look into the PCV valve, hadnt thought of that as an oil consumption contributor. I am still probly going to swap the turbo since I have a spare- it will be a good preemptive measure to the inevitable blowing of my original(which i think has already started).

As a follow up to my above issue: I have completed one oil change cycle since replacing my intercooler (with a jb welded stocker). I was previously consuming a fair amount of oil 1.5-2 quarts between oil changes. Now: None. I did not have to add any. I suppose that goes to show how much an intake leak or faulty pcv valve can affect oil consumption.
