dga
Hi, Let me start of by saying that I am a total audio newb. I can mechanically do anything to my Subaru, but I have never gotten into understanding audio component, short of physically installing them. I have a few questions. I am going to pull the door trim off, since they vibrate a lot and put some sound deadening back there, so I figured I might as well replace the speakers. I was thinking of getting a component system for the front doors (6-1/2" subs, tweeters, and crossovers) and a couple of 2-way speakers for the rear doors. Something like these: front and rear. I am retaining my factory stereo. How much sound better sound quality could I expect from something like this? Or should I even bother with the tweeter and the crossover? Thanks
exsterminator
Very interested in the progression of this though it is my "also-audio-total-noob" understanding that no matter how good the replacement speakers are, if the HU is crap you are wasting money, and consensus is that the Subaru HU is pretty shitty. Do you have the HK 9-speaker system?
dga
Yeah, I kind of thought about that as well. I don't have a HK system since mine is a '08. I imagine wiring an amp to the head unit would go a long way in fixing this?
Pawlwawl06
I have the Polk db component setup in the front and the db woofers in the rear. I've had this setup ever since I bought the car. You will get decent gains if you only replace the speakers, but a new headunit and a decent 4-channel amp will utilize all of the speaker's capabilities. I'm running an Alpine CDA 9884 deck with a Alpine ??F-250 4-channel amp, and its far more powerful than the stock setup. The deck has inputs for the 4 speakers and for a subwoofer, makes life much easier, unlike with the weak stock head unit.
markc0220k
i just rewired and replaced the front speakers, still using the stock HU (no SRS/WOW) and HK sub. sound's ok to me so far(because i have eq). but yeah, the headunit is still giving me a lot of headache - (spend a lot of time on eq/ iron the sound ! ) So, i'm thinking to change the headunit and trash that eq! mark
