A little help for the new guy

Recommended Posts

Sorry to be frank but i been looking around for some threads on 05 outbacks. Just wanted to know what the overall view on them was. Maybe a break down on what you think was a pro and a con towards them. Options you would want to have or look for on them ?

I chose not to get the older gen due to reading that every person was doomed to do a headgasket.

Thanks if you can help me out. Currently in Iraq and looking online for a car for the wife so i can't do much in person but want to have my homework done to help her out.

05 outback and 05 legacy gt wagon are almost the same. The big difference is the suspension. If it's for your wife, would you be surprised if she never noticed a difference is suspensions?

The outback is a very good car. Might as well stick to 05+ if you want a somewhat more refined car than the prior gen "outback". It's yours/her preference more than anything. It's doubtful any subaru will make it to 200k miles without consuming a little money, but the trade-off is that you get an exceptional vehicle. They're good cars. My past/present cars include Audis, Toyotas/Lexus, and from that limited scope, the Outback is the realistic place to be because it can do everything. All that said, get a legacy wagon instead. Why the hell do you need to be an extra foot up in the air?

I live in wisconsin where it snows and its would be easier for to load children to the car and the stuff in the hatch area. And no she might not notice a difference but i will be drving it as well and i like cars to be handling better then they came from the factory.

I have just bought an 05 Legacy 2.5GT Wagon. Let me tell you for kids. It is fantastic because of the child restrants the wagon has. As for winter purposes I am not sure. I have driven my previous 96 Subaru Legacy Wagon in the snow with bald tires and didn't have much of a problem. This car has good tires so I am waiting to see how it is.

You don't get real snow in most of Wisconsin. A legacy will not bottom out. An outback is simply overkill on ride height. But with kid car seat loading, higher is better. Your wife won't let you forget it...

FWIW, IIRC, etc... I believe the head gasket issue ended in '01.

What exactly is real snow ? Typically it comes down by the foot in winter.

That's why I said "most" of Wisconsin. Wisconsin ranges from 30-100 inches per year (depending on season and geography of course this is not news), or so the govt says. At any rate, when I lived on Donner Pass, CA, we were blessed with about 300 inches each of my two years, and the Legacy/Impreza folks were definitely not having any sort of trouble. A Subaru is an excellent snow machine, bested perhaps only by Audi or some SUVs. In the more extreme situations where it 'fell by the foot', MY LGT was not limited by the depth of snow so much as not being able to open the door because the snow in unplowed parking lots would be higher than the door bottom. You will be fine if you choose a Legacy (just get proper tires and all-season [rubber] floor mats). The wifey will want the outback though. You could just tell her the legacy is the name for the sport edition Outback, and she'll be like 'oh cool an outback with husband stuff'. Anyways, snow is not the issue.

Reckless -- To say that "you don't get real snow in Wisconsin" because the comparison is a place like Donner Pass is like saying that Jack Daniels "isn't real liquor" because it's being compared to Everclear. Wisconsin is just the sort of place that Subarus (with snow tires) are made for. And if the car's for your wife, you'll both feel more secure with these capabilities -- a little overkill on safety is not a bad idea, after all.

The extra clearance underneath an Outback is really quite useful, particularly after big snowstorms but also in many other situations. Newly graded gravel roads, for example, can have those "drifts" of gravel along the sides, which the clearance helps to negotiate, should you need to. And going onto non-graded logging roads will be lots easier with an Outback. See if you can find a used Outback XT. You'll love it. HPH

OP what did you buy?

There's definitely a lapse in modern American history. How did people without SUVs and 05+ outbacks get through a lot of snow?

Just for fun (not mine):
