1st time post-have a parts problem with '05

Recommended Posts

First post... hope I came to the right place. My wife took her '05 Legacy GT Limited in to get an alignment. Tech told her she has a bent strut that must be replaced IMMEDIATELY. Why they did the alignment if suspension parts need replacing is beyond me.

She has no idea how it got bent, but I got bent by the quote. They want $556 to replace ONE strust assembly and mount.

So I figure no problem... I'll just buy them and do it myself. Problem is I can't find one! Seems no local auto parts can find one... they are dealer only items. Is that right? Can anyone recommend an online supplier for OEM front struts please?

Also I keep getting asked if it has air suspension... I have no idea... is this an in the car adjustable option or under the car or what? This is the wife's car... I just turn the wrenches. I appreciate any advice!

Many thanks

Mark

I'm sure you can just find a used set online here for pennies. As for new, I have no idea why you couldn't just get it from any autoparts store. For $556 you might as well get "upgraded" parts that you can buy from other retailers.

Try calling fred beans parts and see what they have to say about the prices. They are vendors here and I have personally ordered from them a few times with no problems at all.

Check the suspension forum if you're looking to upgrade.

$556 is a ton of money. Glad you took the car away.

Haveing been told Subaru's are hard to knock out of aligment, I'd ask them what they did to your car.

Why did you take it to have it aligned ?

I'm at 111,600 miles and have never had mine aligned.

Thanks everyone - Max all I can say is, it's my wife's car. :p

I have no idea and she claims to have no idea, but the tech says the right front strut is bent. I actually believe it because you can hear the tire whine. She has had the WORST luck with this car... she has had - no kidding - 6 tires replaced in the last year. Wore out, ran over something, split... just amazing. I have a feeling her alignment has been out and that strut bent for a long time because the last 2 tires she just got for the front were completely worn through to the belt on the far inside of both tires.

I don't drive it very often - usually only when she says something is wrong.

Not looking for an upgrade... just stock. Since I posted this I found what is apparently the only auto parts store in town who can get them. They will be in today.

Thanks again for the reponses. I will be snooping in to see what kind of free HP mods there might be. Might as well do some tinkering that she doesn't know about to have a little bit more fun, eh? ;)

FWIW I think the tire place was trying to scam you. I have a grandmother who always insisted on taking her car in instead of letting me or my dad do it. Sounds like some similar BS they would come up with for her. One time the battery (stock) was too small and needed to be replaced . If you had a bad strut, you would be able to tell by that corner not being able to settle after a big bump.

BUT GET A SECOND OPINION BEFORE YOU GO BUYING PARTS!!!

 You must live in a county that maintains roads. When I lived in Boston, it would get knocked out of alignment regularly. The roads are disgusting.

None free, but consider getting some sort of engine management software and/or a good electronic tune if you want the most bang-for-your-buck upgrade.

Sounds like it have been in a previous accident and someone did a bad job.

Nope. Car is in excellent condition. My guess is my wife hit a big ars pothole and never noticed the change in ride. She wore out the front tire(s) before getting anything done. I drove her car on a short out of town trip in early June and told her to get an alighment then.

Oh well... hopefully she will see it costs her money when she doesn't take good care of it.
