LegacyDriver
Would a leaky valve cover gasket cause overheating? My car is streaming oil from that area, and overheating. I'm having a hell of a time finding this leak, and now it's overheating as well... So yes, would the valve cover gasket cause overheating, or should I be looking for something else? I kinda feel that these two problems have one cause. Thanks for your input.
rao
A valve cover leak will not cause overheating. Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT

LegacyDriver
ok so if its not that, would the head gasket leaking cause overheating? Would a head gasket leak be on the passenger side, driver side, or front?
blackfang
Yes if a headgasket is leaking engine coolant it can overheat. It can leak on either the passenger or drivers side being the heads are on both sides. Max Capacity
What year car ? Mileage ? What is the coolant level doing in the overflow tank ? What does the dip stick look like ? Milky ? It's possible the HG is leaking compression into the valve cover, breather system and causing the pressure to blow some oil out past the gasket. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. blackfang
It's possible the HG is leaking compression into the valve cover, breather system and causing the pressure to blow some oil out past the gasket. Very unlikely but it could happen. Just not often being you have the cylinder head in the way. That is a lot of material for air to work its way past. Now a headgasket leaking both coolant and oil(I have seen those) can cause that as well. It can also make a freaking mess too.
