Connect4
Got an auto myself. Had to get the auto because of my wife. I love her to death, but I think she would ruin a manual. I do miss the manual. That sport shifting is bunk. As for the Young and Dumb thing, there will be others. Only if I could go back and redo some of it. Platinum_Racing
They have their ups and downs. Sometimes you're trying to make your way somewhere in traffic and the highway or freeway is a total parking lot, I'm glad my car is an auto. Other times during "Spirited" driving when my auto transmission seems sbout as sharp as a bowling all I wish I had a stick shift. At the same time I have an 1986 Ford F150 4 speed manual that's pretty good in all traffic conditions. With the 300 cubic inch carb'd inline 6 it had just the right combination of gear ratios to torque that made the gas pedal obsolete when letting out the clutch. Then I had a 1990 Dodge W350 Cummins turbo diesel with a 5 speed with ratios so low first gear only got you to about 4MPH in first with your foot to the floor. The third gear syncro was burnt on that truck, so to downshift to third I would have to bounce the shifter off of second gear to mesh the gears in order to use third. How ghetto is that??? It was good in traffic though, because I didn't have to give it gas to accelerate from a dead stop in anything lower than 3rd gear. I could just put it in first, second, or third and let out the clutch in traffic to get 'er moving, without any throttle. That was kinda nice. Drove a 3 speed auto version with a flatbed and a plow that was the slowest thing I've ever seen. I also had a 1995 Accord with a 5 speed that wouldn't go into third gear altogether because third gear was totally gone. For the record, I hate Honda's, and this thing had 250K miles on it when I GAVE it away for nothing. My girlfriends 2007 Corolla 5 speed feels like a space ship, which is excruciating to drive in traffic, especially since it's so underpowered. Unless you drive like a chick it's a totally aggravating. I guess auto vs manual is a total hit or miss. Depends totally on the car. I'm sure a new Leggy would have enough power to manhandle the transmission, but I wouldn't complain about having an auto version either.
underscore
Same deal here. Got an auto since traffic is a pain, but then I got another job closer to home. Oh well.
FocuS
I couldn't find a 5speed to save my life so I went with the 5EAT...miss the power holding and control of a stick but like the longer final gear in the auto...
Platinum_Racing
Just go fast enough so that the torque converter will stay locked...
ehsnils
I have had a car with an auto gearbox once - and I really figured out that it sucks, and every time I drive and auto I realize that it sucks. Only time it doesn't suck is when the roads are clogged or you drive in the city with a lot of start/stop. But at least I have the dual range gearbox now that actually helps a bit in those situations. And why does it suck? It's because it changes gear whenever it thinks it's right to do it - even if I think it's wrong. And later models where you can change gear manually on AT boxes - well, you can do it, but it doesn't happen when you want it to happen, it takes too long to do it. rmh4097
I got stuck in traffic already on a highway here in PA. It was one of these mountain overpasses, so it was stop and go up a GIANT hill... I was getting so aggravated until I remembered I had hill holder on my Subie... Made everything better. I used to drive my parents Camry and Ford Explorer, both with an automatic tranny, and they never did it for me. The camry shifter too early which was such a pain in the butt, and with the Explorer, if you had to have some passing power on the highway, it would wait until you floored the throttle, and then it would climb to almost 4000 rmps and then shift into the next gear, and if you didn't raise your speed up enough before you let off the petal it would shift right back down on you again, making the engine do a ghastly roar, and causing it to jolt and slow down considerably. The manual is exactly what I needed.

ClimberDHexMods
you know you could trade it in? End of the month is coming up. Do a search in a radius as far as you are willing to drive. Doing the AT to MT swap is ridiculous, sooo many things need to be ordered, sourced, etc. [CENTER][B][I] Front Limited Slip Racing Differentials for the 5EAT now available for $1895 shipped, please inquire for details! Getting a car with the wrong transmission means you are in the same boat as many 5eat owners. Trade it. No one deserves that. Well maybe a mass-murderer, but certainly not some young naive kid. Hope this doesn't turn into an argument thread, but that whole dead kid reference got me. Perrin713
If I had the money I'd be more than willing to trade my car in for a MT. But, I'm not able to float any more jump in my car payments. That BMW car crash was pretty insane. Sucks so many kids lost their lives in that wreck. Every now and then we have the local rice burner wreck and either kill themselves or take out another family out for a sunday drive.
