Looking into a 05 Legacy GT

Recommended Posts

Looking into a 05 legacy gt. Car has 47,000 miles on it looks to be in good shape in pictures(going to look at it tomorrow). For mods it has full borla exhaust, cobb up/down pipe, short throw, and its lowered. Still has almost a year left on the warrenty. Cloth interior, heated seats, dont know much else until tomorrow. I am new to subarus but not to cars in general and the car would be for my girlfriend anyways. I want to put her in something that is good in the snow, gets good gas milage, and wont have major issues. Is there anything on the car I should look for? Also what would one pay for something like this? Blue book puts it around $12k but sellers seem to be asking more? Any common issues I wont want to overlook? Thanks for your time.

Welcome to the forum!

47k for an '05 seems reasonable as mine has about 60K...cloth seats means that it isn't a limited (no sunroof either?)

Is it manual or auto? Will this be a daily driver or weekend ride? If it has the exhaust, UP and DP..does it have a tune to take full advantage of these mods? How was it lowered (springs/coilovers?) What Short throw?

I would get a Carfax no matter what! I think the seller may want more $ because of the aftermarket stuff installed but that really shouldn't figure into it. Milage is gonna suffer a bit b/c of the AWD but you should still be getting somewhere around 20-25 MPG.

Take it for a drive and feel for yourself...

My .02....

Its a standard, as for tuning I am not sure. All the work was done at the local subaru place so I can ask the owner. We deff will get a carfax no question. Will be her daily driver for sure. She will put between 15 and 20,000 miles on it a year. 99% highway miles. I'd be with 25 mpg as her escort gets about 28 right now and isnt very good in the snow.

I guess you are buying from a private seller? Talk him down in price. Mods should not raise the value of the car. If anything they are a detriment to the sale price. Who knows how the work was done and it gives reason to believe the car has been driven harder than a normal car.

I'm not sure what warranty is on the car but, the warranty is worthless if anything in the drive train breaks. SOA will deny the claim based upon the mods on the car. You can try to fight the claim, but it will be a long process usually ending in defeat. Sometimes, just sometimes, they will offer a "good faith" repair. Consider these things not covered by warranty: engine, transmission, rear differential, the rest of the drivetrain, and the suspension.

And yes find out about what kind of tune it has.

Good luck though. They are fun cars.

Good to know about the warrenty, yes its a private owner. The place that did the work is pretty well known and don't seem like drastic mods to me. I understand mods like these dont add to the value of the car, been into foxbody mustangs for years so I know that game:rolleyes:. If I said he was asking $13k would that sound about right?
