Metal to metal vibration noise

Recommended Posts

hey guys,

Here is my situation, when I start to merege onto the hwy, at 3rd gear goin up to around 6k then shift to 4th gear. While I at 3rd at around 5-6k rev, there are some metal to metal vibration noise and as I shift in to 4th, the noise continue, then the noise stop when i shift into 5th at.

Did anyone of you had similiar problem or noise????

Thx,

Junichi

Hmm I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the heat shielding surrounding the exhaust. Is it only in the 3k RPM range? Is it in every gear?

The metal vibration sound kicks in at around 3.5k-6k rev....I am not sure if this happens to every gear. But usually I get that from 3rd to 4th gear......

Crawl under the car and pound on the exhaust with your hand until you locate the rattling heat shield. You can then often fix it with some pipe clamps wrapped around the shield to tighten the pieces together. That is what I did once on my old Ford Explorer.

Or rip it off entirely, which is what our dealer did on our '98.

Bump!

Just found out that it was my heat shield making that awful rattling noise during cold start ups (I honestly thought that was normal for these cars). If I remove it completely, would there be any adverse effects to it?

After a couple hours researching, it seems people either clamp it, remove it completely or remove it and wrap with thermal wrap. Clamping is cheap, but not permanent and may have to be redone ~1/year. Removing it may cause premature wear on the cats, which I don't want. Removing and then wrapping seems like a good idea, but can't find many people doing it on our stock headers.

Another option Adam over at AZP suggested was to go with aftermarket headers. But it seems there are none for the 2006+ Legacy 2.5i's? I haven't really looked into it, since I'm really not looking for any performance/sound gains, but if it's a better fix than removing the heat shields and wrapping, I'd consider it.

Thoughts?

It is similar to one dozen vs 12.

In any event the heat shielding can be removed and the stock 2.5i manifold wrapped with thermal wrap to protect it from the elements and the engine bay from high temps.

They don't make headers for the 2.5i in any iteration (EL or UEL).
