90,000 Mile Service

Recommended Posts

I dropped by the local Subie dealer to see if they had a 2010 Legacy to look at (not yet but supposed to be here soon). I was talking to a couple of techs there about the upcoming 90k mile service.on my '06 Spec.B. Asked whether it would be advisable to do the timing belt replacement at 90k rather than waiting until 105k and they said absolutely yes.

Asked whether turbo failure is just a matter of time (from the posts on here it sounds like most of them go before 100k) and whether I should replace it at 90k to avoid the possibility of one of those disasters where the blades fracture and get sucked into the engine. They said absolutely don't replace it if it's fine; that turbo failure is not inevitable. They said that "by the book" the turbo should be respooled (I'm not sure exactly what that entails) but they said owners rarely have that done and it costs almost as much as a replacement. I never heard that before.

I asked about whether I should have the throwout bearing collar installed, as that's another thing that seems to be high risk as the miles pile up. They said that if that problem is about to happen, you'll have plenty of warning because you'll feel clicking or tapping in the clutch when it's engaged.

Any comments on all that? Anything else to consider doing at 90k besides what's in the manual? I want this car to last as long as possible. Except for the rear wheel bearings, it has been trouble free and I'm extremely happy with it.

Thanks.

If it's convenient wait until 105,000 like the book say's. My thought on them telling you the change it now is, they get your money now.

Then again, if they find anything else wrong it may be covered under the 100,00 mile warrenty if you have that.

I did mine at 95,000 because 105,000 would have been during the winter and I planned on DIY.

Turbo respooled??? never heard of that. I wonder if they meant rebuilt? Sure someone here will comment on that?

I guess your on the OEM clutch if you asking about the TOB. If your worried about the TOB I'd install a better clutch at the same time.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.
