mwiener2
Since I've got the engine out, the clutch is out too. Flywheel is ACT Lightweight. It's a bit too light for my tastes. So I might replace it with a WRX one. It's in good shape. Has the pretty marks on it from being slipped a little too much, but otherwise ok. PP has same marks on it as flywheel. Friction disc I think needs to be replaced. It has maybe 1mm before the rivets are exposed on both sides. Throwout bearing needs to be replaced. I can feel grit in the bearings when I spin it by hand. So what do you guys think. Friction disc and bearing.... or do the whole thing? mwiener2
So here's for giggles. I called ACT to find out how thick the friction disc is when it's new and when it should be replaced. They said that new, it measures 0.315" and should be replaced at 0.25" So I go and measure mine and it comes out to 0.62" I call ACT back and ask if those measurements were for the thickness of one side, or both sides together. They say they are positive that it is for both sides together, but they will have the R&D department look into it. About 2 hours later I get a call back from them saying that they still aren't sure of the measurements, but mine is probably ok. Way to know your product!!! So instead I pulled up a high-res pic of the friction disc and compared it to mine. I estimate that I have a lil over 50% left and will be putting it back in the car with a new WRX flywheel and a new throwout bearing. 05lgt5spd
Wow that makes no sense....let me know what you do, i just picked up a 06 flywheel and i need a good streetable clutch to handle 450tq.... choices, choices. Do you like your act?
mwiener2
Other than the flywheel being too light, it's been a great clutch. it always holds even if I slip it too much at first. It's easy to drive at low speeds (except for the flywheel) My Mods List (Updated 8/22/17) 2005 Outback FMT Running on Electrons
itsme
how bad was the light flywheel? I have the Act LWFW and a '06 WRX fw and I'm trying to decide which one to put on. Th3Franz
That 5 lb difference would be that noticeable between the LWFW? What's the main downside to the ACT LWFW, wiener? I will be upgrading my clutch and flywheel this winter I think. I am still deciding between the stock WRX FW and an ACT streetlite. -Franz The end of a Legacy http://www.youtube.com/th3franz

johnAWD
Lightweight flywheel for daily/city driving is indeed a pain in the arse. If you are a SERIOUS racer then it's recommended, otherwise the 06 wrx part is probably the right choice. I am going to do the same setup (ACT HDMM + 06 wrx flywheel) on my car, currently right around 400 whp / 400 ft-lbs. Surprisingly the oem clutch, with 51k on it, is still holding. I'm hoping it'll last until we get moved.
mwiener2
Noticed something today. My ACT LWFW has a spacer ring on it. Wonder if I need this with the WRX flywheel? My Mods List (Updated 8/22/17) 2005 Outback FMT Running on Electrons

mwiener2
Spacer ring is to make the LWFW work on our cars. It gets tossed if you use a 06+ WRX FW. Now my next super sucky problem.... I cannot for the life of me get the old FW off the old shortblock. I have the proper torx+ bit and all it does it round out. mwiener2
OMG I hate the tech at the Subaru Dealership in Williamsport, PA. That's besides the fact I hate Williamsport in general. So the Torque spec on the flywheel bolts is 52FtLbs. I couldn't get them to budge with a 2ft breaker bar. So I went to home depot and got a 350FtLbs impact gun. Then all the Torx+ bolts stripped out. So then I used a rounded off bolt remover kit and was able to get them off..... but only after breaking the impact gun. Don't think they were at 52FtLbs. They owe me some bolts. I'm going no where fast. So now I get to baby it until I get the bitch replaced. 53K miles, stock up until ~40K then just Cobb AP + Filter. The clutch was shit to start w/ though and should have replaced it under warranty... just did not want anyone, other than me, going into my car like that touching its fiddly bits. terrangama
im curious too. I bought my car with a LWFW and it is the only car I have ever driven stick. When i switched clutches i got a LWFW again. Wondering if there is a big difference, cuz Los Angeles is a bitch!
f1anatic
I got used to it after a while; you'd love it in acceleration but it takes some getting used to - in order to keep the revs up. I would say it revs up 50% quicker. (ACT HDMM and ACT Streetlite FW).

qikslvr
I'm ditching my SPEC LWFW when the clutch goes again. I didn't feel any real gain from it, but I do feel all the vibration; and hear all the noise from the transmission. Let's kick this pig!
