Faster Steering for 05 LGT

Recommended Posts

Sorry, I accidently posted this thread in the photos section

Hey guys,

I have this question stuck in my head, could use your comments to answer it.

Over this summer, I plan to do a suspension upgrade (better sway bars) which I have been told is the best suspnsion upgrade to aid handling.

I feel that the Legacy has a kinda slow steering, I still like it, its just that before buying the legacy, I test drove a 05 WRX Automatic. I loved that car, especially when I approached a 90 degree left hander at considerable speed, tried to hit the apex of the painted road dividing line and the car turned in so fast that i ended up on the wrong side of the road. The steering had a really fast response. It was an amazing adrenaline shot.

But I bought my legacy and I feel I made the right decision.

So my question is that "Is there any way to make the legacy's steering faster? Any tuning, any mod or any aftermarket item?"

Or simply" It Cannot be done"

I thought sway bars just reduce roll during a turn. From what it sounds like to me, you might prefer to upgrade your springs/shocks instead. Those will give you better response and handling. Next things you can do are the Steering column bushings, and/or LCA(lower control arm) bushings. Those will make your steering stiffer, and will give you more 'feel'. But it sounds like you want the opposite? You want your small steering wheel inputs to result in quick steering in your wheels? Sounds dangerous to me at high speeds.

Correct LGT steering ratio is same as USDM STI. Faster than all other USDM Subaru models (except 2010 Legacy which supposedly gets bit quicker rack).

IMO...same rack or not, my buddies stock 2006 STI responds to wheel input significantly quicker than my LGT with coilovers and JDM sway bar..I mean a lot quicker. Maybe it is the bushings??

As a matter of fact, my wifes 09 FXT stearing seems to be quicker too.. :(

Wheel base is a huge factor in this. The WRX has a shorter wheel base than the LGT making it more nimble around sharp turns. A shorter wheel base will also make for a choppier ride.

Think about the wheel base of an F350, or better yet a tractor trailor and how wide they have to take turns. It is a similar concept except not nearly as exageratted lol.

Camber, tire type and profile and LCA bushings can influence steering response.

agreed. you could start by swapping your bushings and then getting aftermarket wheels paired with a tire that has a stiffer sidewall. doesn't involve quite as much labor as swapping the rack out
