difference between sti engines and gt engines?

Recommended Posts

I have a 97 legacy gt that is non turbo and have heard of people switching a 2002 sti engine in its place and was wondering what the difference in the engines really was besides the fact that the sti is a turbo engine and mine that is non-turbo. The reason I ask is bc would it be easier to just rebuild my engine to match a sti or just buy a sti engine?

Welcome to the club. :)

Well, you've got a lot of conflicting points in your post. "2002 STi engine" means it was foreign-market. In North America, the Impreza STi didn't show up until model year (MY) 2004. The MY2004 STi also was 2.5 liters, contrary to the 2.0 liter versions in the foreign markets, which had been around in various versions since about 1994.

But, there's a tremendous difference between the turbo and non-turbo powerplants. Huge. They're the same basic series, EJ, but the similarities stop after the basic layout. There's also a ton of variations of the EJ series, turbo or otherwise, especially if you consider the different sources/markets: US/Canada, JDM, EDM, UK, AUS....

You can put a turbo kit on your stock engine, but the stock N/A EJ251 (which you have) won't handle much boost. Wasn't designed for it. So if you want to go turbo, most folks will say just to rip out your engine and swap it. If you want to go that route, I put together a "where to go" thread, on a forum I moderate for Impreza 2.5RS drivers:

http://www.rs25.com/forums/f128/t63515-please-read-where-can-i-get-my-engine-swap-done.html

Now, if you want to do it yourself, you can still source an engine from most of those shops, though the price is typically higher than sourcing it through a Japan importer or salvage yard or eBay.

And that's just scratching the surface. There are hundreds of threads about this. So, get ready to do a LOT of homework. The tech/FAQ threads at http://www.NASIOC.com are a great resource, too.

It's amusing that everyone bitches about how people are rude and dismissive on NASIOC, and yet....

To be honest, this was much more civilized than I would have imagined.

And thanks to you the OP even got a legitimate response out of it!

Yeah I found one on ebay that seemed pretty cheap but was just curious as to if it was possible and how difficult it would be. Some other forums I read they made it seem like all you do is take out the old engine and put in a new one. Thanks for the info and imput.
