What are the popular Helmet & glove most seen at the track?

I am seriously considering a hybrid (open/closed) as my first helmet.

I'm curious to know what you guys are using.

Gloves are a bit more difficult. I realize I'm going to have to find a local store to really figure it out but how many of you bought online and were very satisfied with what you received?

Something simple that's not loose, has good grip, and fairly comfortable... What makes the $140 glove better than the $80?

Thanks,

I really have no brand advice but I know what differs between less and more expensive gloves. Cheaper gloves are usually made in mass. Most cheap gloves have exposed stitches inside as compared to tucked or rolled stitches so they are less comfortable. Also may not be ventilated as well and any grip surface is probably just hot glued on instead of being sewn in or built in somehow. I always wanted a very nice pair of leather driving gloves for winter but have yet to buy.:spin:Almost everyone offers a pretty accurate measurement guide on their website and quality gloves will stick close to exactly to those. Check with places like Alpinestars or Sparco.

Bell and Simpson are very popular for motorsport. I wear an open face SA2005 Pyrotect helmet. Basically it is a less expensive Bell helmet. I've been looking at glove options too for ensuring a good grip on the wheel. For gloves, a lot of the pricing depends on how many nomex layers there are for fire protection and quality of the stitching like mentioned above.

I've ordered from these guys before: http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/advcat.asp?CategoryID=SAFETY

On the open helmets you just have to take into account if you are running airbags or not. If you are running airbags you will want closed face helmets as it gives you more protection from the airbag IIRC.

I use a Bieffe SA2000, have 2 different ones actually but have been using the same one since about 2000.

I chose a full face Bell because it does double duty as a karting helmet. Full face does make speaking to an instructor or passenger in the car a little more difficult, but that's what the motorcycle radios are for.

And gloves, well, I guess the contact between my hands and steering wheel is not the weakpoint in my driving ability. That would likely be the contact between my a$$ and the seat cushion. I've always found better things to spend money on, like more front brake pads.

I've only worn gloves when racing, and that's cause it was required safety equipment. Otherwise I never use them, as others have stated, my abilities aren't good enough to "need" gloves. :) Besides then my pinky ring gets covered up and a goomba like me can't have that! :)

Thanks guys,

My hands don't sweat that much but any detectable film between the hands and wheel bugs me and there are soo many to choose from even within just the Alpinestar brand.

Road course, HPDE for starters...

I'm looking into pads (thinking XP10 or 12's), and other than helmet/gloves, vf52... I'm all set.

Thanks Mike, I've got all the usual stuff pretty much covered.

Looking around...there are just soooo many helmets/gloves to choose from.
