What Mods to get for my new LGT?

Recommended Posts

I just bought a 2005 Legacy GT Limited (5EAT) and i wanted to know what mods to do. I've searched around and so far I,m looking to get the COBB AP, COBB DP, Either the Invidia Up or the Maddad Header kit with the Up. I want to get a catback but I,m not sure since I,m a daily commutor and i dont want any drowning. Also looking into the Perrin TMIC and maybe an upgraded turbo like the VF52. If you guys have any suggestions please post or pm thanks. I'm new here so i would appreciate the help and hopefully you guys wont be too hard on me for probably reposting something that has been asked 1000 times.

For God's sakes, no drowning allowed.

I just installed Greddy Evo2 CBE. I like it, it's not too loud and FredBeansParts has a great deal on the sedan exhaust systems.

PS. It doesn't drone.

Uh, I think the important question that hasn't been answered is what do you want to do with the car? Are you going to track or autocross it? Straight line speed (drag)? Spirited daily driver? Show car?

Once you answer that you can decide the direction you want to take. I'm going to track mine quite a bit so I did wheels/tires/brakes/suspension first then I added a little power (CBE and a E85 tune). I've got plenty of power now and she handles like she's on rails (and stops on a dime). My setup is VERY stiff so it wouldn't be fun for a daily driver (although she is my daily) for someone that didn't care about handling like I do.

And on handling if you're not tracking/autoX don't do too much - you'll never push that hard on the street (at least you shouldn't) so you probably don't need it. Wheels and tires would be enough there...

On a 5EAT with those kind of mods you want to help out the tranny or you might feel it slipping. Get a tranny cooler at first and when you get to stage 2 and beyond you'd probably want to look into doing the valve body mod from IPT. Maybe get a trans mount insert from rallitek just for kicks :) mixed reviews on that but I have one and think it actually does help.

Lots of good info above. I, too, just got an '05 LGT 5EAT a month ago. The car will be my spirited daily driver with anywhere from 2-4x track usage per year. I'm also planning on daily-driving this car as long as reasonably possible, so longevity is critical.

After I spent many late nights reading, I ended up installing the JDM 20mm RSB and got me a Stage 1 Infamous1 tune. By end of week, I'll have upgraded the brakes, tires, and small tranny additions. Finally I will consider suspension upgrades based on unclemat's sticky + other threads, but I'll study up a bit more before I commit to something.

Thanks for the info guys great help. Well basically i want it mainly for daily commuting but once in a while i might go to the track & maybe some drag. Maybe i could drag race on the runway against one of my helicopters at work:lol:.

I would say hold off.

Read read read read read.

Do it right the first time. I bought a few things that I would not have if I waited and did a little more reading.

+1 for a lot of your information can be found in the Turbo subforum.

Good luck.

Yea i haven't really bought anything yet. I'm trying to get a basic idea of what to get first that way i wont spend money unnecessarily. Plus i don't have the money to buy everything all at once; I want to space everything out throughout the year. Trust me I've been reading and doing all the research i can possibly do before i make a purchase. Only things so far that i have done are HID Headlights and fog and swapped the radio head unit out of an 07 Spec B (with aux mod). All i really want is Sleeper LGT, underestimate me and the next thing you know your getting your ass handed to yourself on a silver platter:rolleyes:.

Do you really think i need to get those transmission coolers and valve kit mod? I drive normal but on some occasions i floor it even with the mods i'm thinking about getting i still wont beat on it like that. I just want to have the extra power there but most likely ill add the trans cooler. Anyways what mod do you think i should get first im thinking the Cobb AccessPort what do guys think?

If I were you, I'd start off with a better sway bar kit. With my '09 LGT, I noticed my car has a bit of oversteering. I am thinking of making the front sway bars more stiff and the rear more soft.

My friend suffered the same thing with his 05 EAT LGT. He did the same mod and now has his handling just right, barring suspension mods like new struts. However, another mod you can look into is making your Leggy breath better. That should give you a bit more kick plus save you fuel in the process. He gets more power from pressing the pedal less versus when he would have to floor it.

But as others have noted, read on these forums about mods that people have done and see what applies to your driving style. Then just plan from there. :)

I added the Cobb AP first along with a K&N pannel filter first. It added a good amount of power and removed the low rpm studder. Last month my check engine light came on. The Cobb AP let me check the code (gas cap was too lose) and turn off the check engine light. That was easier than going to the dealer and paying them.

I've raced my stock and now with Perrin 22mm sways and endlinks. The car stock has horrible understeer when you push it -not oversteer. The bigger sways make it almost neutral with a bit of oversteer if you go beyond the limits of the tires on a curve. If you never plan to race it or live where you mostly have straight roads, the stock sways are enough.

You are like the umpteenth person to say understeer. How am I getting oversteer (on power) where others are getting understeer? For example, I go around a corner rated at 60 mph, but I go up to 65 mph. My car's tail gets loose until I take the foot off the gas. Am I doing something wrong? :(

Check your alignment. It's possible there's too much toe in the rear.

Yes. I would upgrade the transmission if you plan on Stage 2+ power. Better safe than sorry.

As for other performance mods, suspension and brakes before power FTW. ;)

These cars normally push the fronts with the lame 16mm stock RSB. Mine sure does.

Do you have to have the car aligned after replacing sways? I assume not but it doesn't hurt making sure. My wagon rolls around badly and it annoys me.

Well it's not that expensive and ill rather be safe then sorry. Abuse you say hmm i doubt i would be doing that often. Unless im stuck in traffic for a while; once i get an opening i tend to floor it. I just really want the AP i hate seeing my rpms so low, i have to have my a/c on so it stays in normal ranges. It already died on me twice and in between an intersection. Plus that added power gain would be great.

Sounds like you are off to a good start. Once you have the AP, you might want to consider picking up a used DP on the forum (I got one for about $300) and install it yourself. Then go stage 2, you wont be disappointed!! After that, I would say sways, brakes and shocks and springs/coilovers, in that order.

As for the oversteer/understeer debate, I have had my car to the track and have had some fun elsewhere and notice that the car oversteers with throttle, but the 4wd keeps the car controlled. I love the look on my instructor's face when I start to push at the beginning of the turn and then fling the ass of the car around just in time when I add some throttle. Just put a fattie Perrin 25mm rsb on the car and it is a little too twitchy in the corners. I think I have to add one to the front and then cut the rear back to 22mm to make it more predictable.
