Generally an aftermarket tach has 5 wires. Positive, negative (Ground), Accesory (To activate/deactivate the device when the key is turned on), interior lights, and coil.

Wire positive to your battery terminal, negative to the chassis, accessory to the accessory wire on your radio (If it's easier you can also wire the positive here as well), dash lights to your dash light switch (When you switch on your headlights) and coil to the coil. The instruction booklet that comes with the tach will come with a color coded chart that tells you which color coil wire to attach this to according to the make of the vehicle. Then you just need to mount the tach on the car (Dash, pillar, steering column, wherever convenient).

thanks for the reply, but what i am really looking to find out is ....can a subaru instrament panel cluster with a tach, plug into my subaru brighton that came without a tach? will it plug right in and work properly? has anyone done this before and know the answer?

They probably just zip tie the wiring harness to another wiring harness. The plugs for the upgraded cluster should be in there somewhere. :) It's probably just another plug behind the dash with 5 wires on it, since all the other guages are the same, the only additional guage is the tach, meaning it probably has it's own separate plug.

I'm going to need to take my gauge cluster apart some time this weekend on my '99 Legacy GT. If you want me to take pictures or anything, let me know.
My 9.3 cups EJ22 makes me feel like my **** is 2.8 decimeters!
