smonkbmw
I picked up a Avo panel from RalliTek last week. Install wasnt difficult but it seemed easier to remove the whole air box assembly on my 09 pzev car. Upon removing the air filter i noticed a second "filter" mounted in the air box on the MAF side. I being a noob at these new cars popped that out along with the air filter. After removing it i noticed its construction is far different than a actual air filter and the fact that it was glued in. Im running the car with it in currently as i dont know what it is. anyone have any guesses? is it critical to engine operation? im going to epoxy it back in possibly today, but is this something Subaru might see and try to get me on my warranty later? my only guess at what it is is that its designed to slow air flow down right before the meter. why? i dunno, but thats my only guess thus far. smushybrain
I have that second "filter" thing on my car and I'm not sure why it's there, either... I left it alone, though. (I just finished cleaning my AVO filter and am currently waiting for it to dry.)
NORULZleggy
If I am guessing right it is a filter so crap does not get to the MAF, I have herd of screens or something of the sort. I would deff put it back on the car.
Kelvrick
I have that as well. When installing my AVO with a friend, he looked at me and said, "with where you like to drive, lets keep it in." I agreed. Didn't look too restrictive if I remember correctly. My Outback
DarkOblivion000
I haven't done this yet, but with my previous experiences changing air filters, don't you just unsnap the air box, pull the air filter out and slide the new one in? You don't need to take out the airbox at all right?

smushybrain
I found it pretty easy to just loosen the intake hose that attaches to the airbox and pull that out of the way. Move the hose on the bottom of the airbox that's in the u-shaped clip. Unclip the two clips on the top and then wiggle the back portion of the airbox back enough to pull the filter out. It's a little harder than my previous cars... but shouldn't take more than a few minutes...
smonkbmw
got rallitek investigating this mysterious extra filter in the air box. hopefully AVO will know something.
NORULZleggy
why are you worried about this extra filter? I would say just put in the AVO filter and call it good. It is not like removing the so called extra filter will give you some crazy power gain. Also do you have a car manual, if so look in there or look it up. Osei
if all else fails, why not just call the dealer? O.
Ryouske
I'm sure it's there for a reason I know what your talking about.
cino135
got an AVO coming from Fredbeans as well. ive taken the whole thing apart when putting on the wasted CAI and didn't see any extra filter. i hope it just doesn't show itself when trying to install the AVO.....lol. no clue what this could be though and why its not on mine?! id agree with above, last resort, call the stealer, i mean dealer! stephan47
Is it the mesh that goes to the MAF air sensor?
smonkbmw
maybe its something new for 09? or PZEV? i havent heard anything from rallitek yet on it either. AHA, diagrams would probably help. its the piece in between the air filter element and the part of the box with the MAF attached to it. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d196/professor2u/366495107002.png

cino135
just installed mine yesterday at work, 2 mins after it came in. total, from walking out of office to walking back in, it took 10 mins! i hade a phillips head and a clip removal tool. working at a body shop has its benefits sometimes! i know its gotta be mental, but i certainly thought i felt a bit smoother acceleration and a better pur out of m'lady yesterday afternoon after install and on the way home (hwy roads). WhatV8
well....yeah...the bottom of the 2 lines for #6 is the one im speaking of. I would have to think that the extra screen is there for warranty issues or possibly to smooth the air flow out a bit. I wonder if Subaru has some evidence of damage to either the MAF sensor or engine due to chunks of 'stuff' getting injested into the intake. My '86 Mustang SVO had a stamped metal screen insert between the filter and VAF sensor to prevent 'stuff' from getting into the VAF flapper door or worse yet, turbo blades. Put it this way, I can't see Subaru spending the extra $$ to add another component to that part of the car w/o some valid reason. Being in manufacturing myself, the last thing you want to have to do is develop, purchase, stock and assemble another part if you don't have to.
