vr4Legacy
This may be an odd question, but I was just watching "Wheelers Dealers" and seeing those blokes drive their RHD cars made me think..... is the shift pattern different on a MT RHD v a MT LHD??? Meaning in America I start out in 1st gear closest to me (the left side of the vehicle) and shift away til I'm in 5th furthest from me (closest to the right side) Are RHD set up the exact opposite so that you shift in the same fashion, from yourself away or on a rhd car do you start in first on the left side of the car and when you end up in 5th are you closest to you? Just something that popped in my mind..... thanks for the input.
987687
I'm pretty sure it is the same. People use JDM transmissions in the US and I have never heard anyone complain that the shift pattern is reversed. Besides, there is no reason to reverse it, it really doesn't matter one way or another, and would constitute designing 2 different transmissions in mirror image. slimjoe
I drove a MT Vauxhall in the UK the other month and it's the same shift pattern as what we have here. 1st is at the top left and everything follows from there.
ehsnils
No shift pattern difference as far as I have seen.
Guest
Nothing is different (orientation wise) between RHD & LHD.... pedals are also arranged the same - clutch far left, gas far right. Interestingly exception are steering column stalks. Some RHD cars have turn signal stalk on left (like on LHD), some flip it on put it on right. I vaguely remember noticing that European RHD cars don't flip sides of these, but Japanese RHD cars do. RHD Legacy have turn signal stalk on right. Weird. Older Rovers did have the turn signal stalk on the right side even on LHD cars, but it actually makes sense to have the stalk to the opposite side of the steering column from the gear stick since you sometimes operate both. Only thing that can get a bit messy from time to time is that you turn on the wipers when you are going to turn when you shift car often. My friend has an Eunos Roadster (a.k.a. Mazda Miata) that's RHD while my car is LHD and you just have to smile and correct...
vr4Legacy
thanks for the feedback... I kinda didn't figure it would be different, like someone said it's just what you get used to. Some other interesting facts though about RHD cars. Thanks!!
Alex--TheGreek
Another nice fact for the RHD-LHD cars is that although the cars in my country are RHD, when i was in Finland and drove LHD cars i loved the fact that the ashtray is in the perfect position!( next to your right hand)
BAC5.2
RHD Legacy have turn signal stalk on right Yep. You find that out QUICK after you snap off the windshield wiper stalk when you want to make a right turn.
