Potential purchase, wierd tranny problem 5MT

GP2001

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, was test driving a 2005 LGT with my buddy today ( trying to get yet another to join the club ), it was a 5MT. It had this odd problem when you floor it through first and second, then went right to 5th, 5th gear grinded pretty bad. Checked the fluid level and it was fine. There was no grinding when driving normal, just from a floored 1-2 shift, then straight to 5 after 2 ran out of gear. Even if you take 2nd gear to like 5,000 rpms then go to 5th its fine, its just if you wind it all the way out. (Thank god the dealer wasn't in the car for all of this WOT analyzing, probably would have freaked, lol) Also, when stopped moving the shifter through the gearbox, putting the shifter into 5th gear made a little click noise it did not make in the other gears. Any idea what it is? I am thinking throwout bearing? Its a really good deal, so if thats all it is I might tell him to get it and we will just change the tob and clutch right away. Let me know what you think:confused:

I'm confused. why are you shifting from 2nd gear to 5th? what happened to 3rd?

with the click, does it have a STS? when I installed my kartboy I noticed the shifter hit the metal plate around the shift box. only happens when i forcefully put it into 5th.

258k miles - Stock engine/minor suspension upgrades/original shocks/rear struts replaced at 222k/4 passenger side wheel bearings/3 clutches/1 radiator/3 turbos

Nope its bone stock down to the paper air filter, lol There is nothing wrong with 3rd or 4th, it was just a 0-60 pull then stopping and going to 5th to cruise.

The grind and the 'click' sound like a worn syncro- the speed change inside the trans from 2nd to 5th would give you a more pronounced effect than the smaller change from 4th to 5th, hence the grind on 2-5 and only a click on 4-5. Do you physically feel a little 'catch' as you shift from 4-5, or it it just a positive 'snick' type shift?

I'm surprised it would be a worn syncro already thats the only reason I didn't think that was it, it only has 40 something miles one it ( dont remember the exact number, i want to say 46,000?). Shifting from 4 to 5 feels just like any other shift. Its just the 2 to 5, it does feel like something isnt lining up causing it to grind, so syncros do make sense. Would this be covered under a powertrain warranty? Is it a big enough deal to walk away, if the syncros are showing signs this early of being bad think the trannsmission will be shot in the near future? Like I said its a killer deal, and he is trading a car in and getting a great price and also has some issues with that worse than syncros...
