porting and polishing intake manifold

Recommended Posts

I picked up a second intake manifold off of what i think is an older impreza, looks exactly the same except that the piece in between the intake manifold and the actual heads is one piece in this one, i was wondering what the best way to go about smoothing out the whole interior piece for better flow, i intend on doing a little bit of porting so they match up to the heads as best as possible, but there's the problem of getting all the way up to the bends in the casting.

Just looking if anyone has any ideas.

I intend on polishing up the whole exterior smooth and painting it with probably some black enamel (don't wanna pay for chrome or powdercoating) and picked up a spare alternator for cheap that i might crack apart and do a little custom painting on that too :p Just a little dress up on 'er.

I'm not sure of any DIY way to get all the way up into the bends.

Most DIY intake porting and polishing is usually done by putting the gasket in the correct place, outlining it, removing it and then grinding and smoothing the material away right up to the edge of where the gasket goes and smoothing the surface into the ports as far as you can go. Maybe get some sort of a flexible extension for your die grinder...

Porting is probably only really helpful on the intake side if you can do the heads to match... otherwise the heads are going to be a bottleneck.

yeah i understand that, i'm more just trying to get it as smooth as possible for the best flow with as little restriction as possible, especially since it'd be a spare intake manifold essentially. I'd probably clean up the intake ports on the head real nice before i put the next one on anyways and clean everything up as much as possible. My biggest problem will be being able to get into all of the nooks and crannys, and does anyone know why that tube it sticking up in the middle a little over halfway on the intake manifold? I'm unsure of what it is.

that is gonna be a tricky one you would almost need a honning head but smaller like the type used for cylinder heads

Where you able to do any thing with the intake?

I'm actually going to start this afternoon, run and pick up some bits for a dremel tool... didn't realize one of my buddies here at college has a dremel tool, i was gonna gank one from home, but now since i don't have to do that, i'll start today and see where it gets mean, i wanna clean up the whole outside and make it smooth for some high heat paint and clean up the inside for best air flow... gotta pick up a new gasket from the subie dealership by my house for between the head and manifold though
