2009 Legacy 2.5 GT Blown engine

Recommended Posts

I have a 2009 2.5 GT. In December my engine blew up at 720 miles and left me stranded in the middle of no where. They eventually put a new "Crate engine" in it. Last week I was driving and all the emergency lights on the dash went on and stayed on and the engine died while in drive. The new engine now has 5600k miles on it. I had the car towed to the dealership and they told me that whenever they try to chase the problem down it disappears. They are hoping that a software update that came out this weekend solves the problem. I am not a happy customer. I bought this car new on Nov 22, 2008. Starting tomorrow it will be 30 days total that I have been without a car. Has anyone else had these kids of problems with their Legacy? Also, has anyone out there lemon-lawed a vehicle before? What is the process? I do not feel this vehicle is reliable and I bought new to get a reliable vehicle--boy did I get the shaft!!

5600k?

That would be 5 600 000 miles. You are well past the Moon but still far from Sun.

PS Check your state lemon law. Days out of use may be enough to invoke it.

Ha Ha. Yeah I actually meant it have 5,600 miles on it.

What triggers the Lemon Law? If the same defect or condition has been subject to repair four or more times during a period of one year from the date of purchase or if the new car is out of service due to those repairs for a cumulative total of thirty or more business days during the same period, then the Lemon Law may apply.

Be sure it is business days.

In NJ, 30 days out of service is enough to qualify for Lemon Law (my father LL'd a Lincoln that way in the 90's, turned out a misplaced dash screw was shorting out his wiring harness took them 45 days to figure it out). A google search should let you know what you need...

Sorry to hear it :(

Your expeience is not typical. Software isn't the problem, something else is wrong.

ditto, that sucks; guess you wouldn't get another LGT???

I tell myself that an N/A Forester is just an STI without all the fluff like, power, handling, style, racing heritage, and curb appeal.

I'm just guessing here, but:

1st is likely something like a casting defect. This can happen to basically any car and shos itself very early.

2nd. I'll bet someone at the dealer fucked something up.

Hopefully, this doesn't turn you off of what is a pretty reliable car (generally), but I wouldn't blame you for lemon lawing it.

That dealer needs to be giving you a damn loaner.

The 2009 WRX's had a bunch of failures at early miles. Engine replacement fixed it, there was a build issue with them. A faulty part or something.

Perhaps you originally got one of those engines. The second issue might just be from a bad engine install. A poorly connecting harness, a short, who knows. I would try another dealer? Their response did not seem too good when you took it back in, and they were the ones that installed it... so perhaps there is a common link there... they are no good.

Here is a list of failed 09 engines on Nasioc. Take it for what its worth, but from what I can tell its a trustworthy list.

When I had a problem with a Hyundai dealer, I called Hyundai Corporate. They sent the dealer a free transmission for me when the dealer said it wouldn't be covered under warantee. Of course once the corporate guy left the dealership the dealership told me they weren't going to put it in for free, but they saved me $2,300 anyway.....

Try calling Subaru Corporate. They'll hook it up if you give them the full scoop... Including the fact that this is the second engine you're car has had major problems with in under 7K miles....

Sorry to hear about your car being a dud :(. My engine blew with 2200 Km on it. They wanted to drop in a new engine. Eventually, I got a brand new car after complaining to Subaru Canada Inc... Don't waste time talking to the dealership. Call SOA ASAP! They may be able to compensate you somehow. Good luck.

There is clearly something very wrong with that car. I would DEMAND a new car, and an upgraded one at that, at no extra cost. Why should you have to deal with this when buying a new car? I also highly doubt this will just go away forever, brace yourself to be haunted with a problematic car for a long time.

Did the dealership tell you about the break in procedure for the 1st 1000 miles? Drive it easy, try not to go past 3K RPM?

Most every engine anymore is pre-broken in. Yes, they do have a break in period, but its not as necessary as a lot of people think. Its not like the first time you turn the car on is the first time the motor has ever ran.

Thank you to all for your advice and concern. I got my LGT back last week after they flashed the ECU with new software. I was told that this software update was specifically for the problem I was having. So far I have not had any problems and the car seems to be a little faster as well. Wierd. We contacted SOA and complained to them again about all the issues we were having. Suprisingly enough they did absolutely nothing for us when the engine had to be replaced at 720 miles. But when we contacted them again about our latest and greatest "dead car" incident they offered to give us the Subaru Added Security (SAS) Gold Plus warranty as a matter of "goodwill". It is a $0 deductible plan that covers the vehicle for 6yrs/100,000 miles. That makes me feel a lot better about everything. At least I know that I will be fully covered now. I am glad they are trying to make right for all the inconvenience it has caused. We are driving 2000 miles round trip this weekend in the LGT, let's hope I dont have to call Roadside Assistance again.

"Hi, can I have the updated software for the catastrophically failing engines..." Sounds a bit fishy to me, anyone else?

I've dealt with SOA before, they are completely useless. Almost as if they don't even care... I'm glad they helped you like that the second time around though.

Subaru issued a stop sale on all 2.5Turbos awhile back. The link below has the VINs that were recalled on it. Maybe yours was on the list:
