mrjk77
set of these came today from tirerack.com. did some searching before and these seem to be fairly new and/or no one has really reviewed them extensively. might as well ask here if anyone had good luck with them. some people reported that the tread goes quick but found they were pretty sticky. i'm still on the RE92s so they WILL be an upgrade. going to be putting them on some rota tarmac 3s (18x8) that should be arrive next week, and hopefully getting them on the car shortly thereafter. once i get them on i'll give a review. tread pattern looks a little strange and maybe it's just not "cool" looking. but thats ok i really don't care as long as they hold up nice for a summer tire. http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr133/mrjk77/LGT/DSCF1043.jpg http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr133/mrjk77/LGT/DSCF1039.jpg
bmononana
^^^I see what you mean about the tread pattern - shouldn't they be symmetrical? I know NOTHING about tires, but I would expect them to be so... Im pumped to see what those tarmacs look like!
mrjk77
no, they are suppose to be asymmetrical. which they are. what i meant was a summer tire that looks something like the file attached. its just that squiggly tread haha. i dunno, maybe it's just me. mrjk77
awesome, thats great to hear! how's the handling? wet traction? any other comments? now i'm really happy i jumped on the deal that i got on these.
mrjk77
Wow those water channels look huge! yeah, i did originally think the tread, including the water channels, looked on the larger side. i just haven't seen really any good reviews on these things. but i jumped. will throw them on next week (hopefully) when the rotas come in and will try to give a proper review of them then. sooberoo
If these are unidirectional (and I believe that they are) then there will be arrows on the sidewall indicating proper tire orientation when the car is moving forward. I waited for these tires last year for my GT, but had to pull the trigger on something else due to time constraints. It must be a Hankook thing. Fer instance, the new Ventus RS3 is supposedly finally due for release but I heard they may have missed the deadline for the spec Miata racing crowd. Oh well, my RS2s on my Miata can probably last another season and there will be a years worth of reviews when the time comes to replace them with the RS3s! Keep us informed as to how the S1's work out for you.

Keep us informed as to how the S1's work out for you. i checked and didn't see any arrows. i did see "out" and "in" stamped on the appropriate sidewalls though. they are definitely unidirectional and i'd assume you'd want the tread marks to go/point towards the rear of the car? krzyss
asymmetric: in, out or inside, outside directional: rotation arrow asymmetric and directional: both; not to mention left and right tires. Krzys
mrjk77
thanks that helps. i see the "in"/"out", but no rotation arrow. i might not be looking hard enough tho.
Ridgeracer
Wow those water channels look huge! Granted the water channels are huge but with that thread pattern, I doubt that you will be able to drive through anything beyond light rain with those. nka
true, there's nice water channels, but no evacuation
mrjk77
i know right. where is the water suppose to go once its in the channel? keep spinning round and round hopefully it wont rain too much this summer?
nka
Yep, you'll be keeping all the water in the tire, until there's no water left in the world ! Seriously, you'll have good grip on the wet, don't fear. Hankook is a good brand !
mrjk77
this makes me kinda sad. but i got a great deal on them and hopefully it'll be a decent summer tire. and yeah hankook is a good brand. autumn GT has them on his wagon and he's from singapore, and it probably rains there more than here? nka
man, don't be sad. You'll be very surprised when you'll try them! There's no evacuation tread, but since the channels are so huge, water won't stick in there... except if you hit a lake. + there's some "wave" on in inside and some (i don't know the word... those little hole) on the other side, that is just to make sure water will not stick too much on the tire
mrjk77
haha i was trying for a little melo-drama, but i obviously failed at that. i think if i tried driving on a lake, my problems would far exceed anything the tires couldn't handle.
mrjk77
got these put on today, finally. not too much of a review as of yet, since i've driven like 15 miles on them. ride thus far has not been noticeably different compared to the stock wheels, surprisingly. tire noise is minimal at highway speeds too...less than the stockers. here are some pics. http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr133/mrjk77/rota%20tarmac%203s/DSCF1052.jpg http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr133/mrjk77/rota%20tarmac%203s/DSCF1063.jpg http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr133/mrjk77/rota%20tarmac%203s/DSCF1061.jpg http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr133/mrjk77/rota%20tarmac%203s/DSCF1064.jpg
mrjk77
well i just got back from a drive...wanted to test out the tires some more. drove about 80 miles, mostly highway, some back roads. these things are nice. again, minimal noise at highway speeds, handling is great. granted, i'm coming from the stock RE92s. i drove about a year on them, roughly 15k miles. even made it through this past winter on them, which were fine, just had to take it slow on heavy snow days. anyway, coming back tonight, it started raining cats and dogs. i wasn't sure what to expect, but the tires held up great. no hydroplaning whatsoever at highway speeds, even when everyone else was slowing down. guess the huge channels work pretty well, cuts through standing water without any trouble. these are definitely great value tires for the summer. now i just need to work on the suspension a bit and brakes. rs6er
Tires aren't directional. Can go on either side of car as long as "in" is in and "out" is out.
sooberoo
Tires aren't directional. Can go on either side of car as long as "in" is in and "out" is out. The asymetrical tread pattern requires that the wiggly tread in the tire is mounted on the outside of each wheel. Doesn't that make this a unidirectional tire then? I have the Kook icebears as winter tires on my stock rims. I think that they may have an asymetrical tread as well. I am going to check and see if there is an in and out mark on them as I am pretty sure that Discount tire mounted them all the same way!
rs6er
No. It means you have to mount the wiggly tread on the outside of the wheel. After it is mounted that way, you can put it on either side of the car. Assymetrical is different from directional.
mrjk77
lol the wiggy is yes, on the outside of the wheel = asymmetrical. but these tires are not directional; which would require a left tire and a right tire.
