Tow truck misadventure

Recommended Posts

So I had to have my car towed due to a striped spark plug. They pulled it backwards up the flat bed. And when taking it off again, left the front driver's side cable connected... This is the damage that ensued...

Driver's side door hinge a bit off:

Driver's side of the trunk sits nice and flush:

Passenger's side... not so much:

$506.22 to fix, about $75 more if the alignment is buggered. They are paying.

Yikes! Sorry about your misfortune. :(

BTW, what do you mean about "striped" spark plug? Do the stripes make them better? Hotter spark perhaps? :p

Yeah, it is a special brand, it adds 150whp :p

For those of you asking how it happened, read my first post...

I assume he was trying to get enough speed to roll it the whole way into the garage... but probably started it up to back up the ramp again... who knows... I'm not going there again, that's for sure.

wow, could they have bent the frame (sub-frame car, I know)? Fudged up the LF and missaligned the RR?!?

The frame is bent, it is going to have a field trip on the frame machine.

I thought it seemed somewhat low too... the door isn't bent though, it is the hinge. Probably can be replaced or bent back how it was. The trunk is probably off because of frame bendage. So it will be better after it gets off the frame machine.

Now - what caused the hinge to get bent means that this is one damage that's visible, you may have 10 fractures in the body at the same time, and if the trunk is off - that's at the rear end and that means that the force that the car and crash cage had suffered must have been over the safety limit.

I would certainly want that checked by a third party before anything is done at all. The crash safety of that car may well have been compromised - especially since the trunk is misaligned.

Get a second opinion. Not to be hard, but the car is old, the frame looks bent, I'm thinking totaled.

Call your insurance agent, ask them what they think ?

Who quoted you $500? You see newer cars on here getting totalled for that amount of frame tweaking...

Make sure you get your quote from a shop that is not associated with whoever is responsible for the damage.

Heck, a painted bumper cover ALONE costs $850. The fender (with the small dent in it) would be 750 is replaced, $400 if refinished. The upper radiator tie bar looks to have been twisted down on the driver's side (look at the flat section where the rad mounts).

Seriously, even if the frame straightening sorts out all the body gaps I'd still be VERY suspicious if the person liable for the damage was doing the repair work.

The person who did it wanted me to go to one certain body shop... really, really bad.. really bad.

But I went somewhere 45 minutes away.

Wow. That really sucks!

I would definitely be suspicious if he begged you to go to a specific shop.

On the bright side, if it's totaled, there is 50,000 Legacy GT's for sale on craigslist in new england. Wagons and sedans.

definitely call your insurance company. I would hate to see the towing company pull a fast one on you.

Good luck!

Good for you. Are you going through insurance?

I swear that damage looks worse than $500 - just make sure the bodyshop finishes the car and finds any hidden damage before you take a check from the tow company.

The guy who repaired it is also the one who towed it. He used to run a towing business before he fixed subies.

It actually isn't as bad as it looks, just needs the front support replaced, and a bit of time on the frame machine. It just looks bad with the front support bent.

And they are sending the bill right to the towing guy. So it won't go through me at all.

He has a $500 deductible on his insurance, so he is just gonna pay it.

When he told me that on the phone, I almost said "sucks to be you"

He wanted me to put it through my insurance, which is silly, it was his fault.

But I don't have insurance anyway, I just have coverage for if I hit someone else's car.
