BLACKonBLACK Limited
2005 legacy gt 5mt. 45k never launched stage 2.5 but driven aggressively I have been hearing a clicking noise while decelerating, in gear and out of gear. Sounds like bad U joints, but the sound is coming from the tranny or at least seems like it is also the noise is speed dependent clicks faster when you going faster and clicks slower as you come to a stop. Also my clutch has been on its last leg for the last few months now and I am worrying it caused some issue with the transmission. The clutch has slipped a few times and is releasing really close to the floor, also there is hardly any play in the clutch now, its either engaged out disengaged no area for play. I started hearing this noise after i switched to Subaru extra S fluid. It seems to me the clutch is definitely toast which i already figured but could that be causing the clicking noise i hear? the price of a clutch/install is pushing my financial limits as is.... Anyone have any ideas? Thank you.

BAC5.2
Could be lots of things. Just how bad is the clutch? If it's slipping REALLY badly, it could actually be slipping on decel, and that would definitely make noise. Try to locate the noise a little better, and we'll see if we can't trace it down. BLACKonBLACK Limited
makes the noise in gear or out of gear or with the clutch in doesn't matter, not slipping on decel. The clutch isn't slipping bad either just when its cold in 5th, but i know its on its last leg.
jarrod
it sound like this? [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNdMudqMhTA]YouTube - noise.3g2[/ame]
BLACKonBLACK Limited
yikes that sounds bad... but no you can only hear it when you are slowing down to a stop because the road noise + exhaust noise is louder than the click. The noise in the video you posted sounds more like grinding not a click,,,click,,,,click,,
jarrod
it's definately a click when decelerating...definately not grinding. May be the video
BAC5.2
How fast are you going when it makes the click? Click when turning? Clutch engaged or not... Okay, I lied. It clicks on decel around 20mph only when the clutch is disengaged (pedal to the floor). I have a 06/07 WRX Flywheel and ACT HD Clutch Disc installed. ClimberDHexMods
I have had something a lot like that sound on other vehicles, bad u-joint. Don't know about your car, but it's possible. tt jax
I have the same noise on my 60k 06 Spec B trans. It is in the process of being torn down at the dealership as I had it checked at 59.5k although it had been going on for several weeks. Servicing the transmission had NO effect what so ever. Several trained ears seem to think it may possibly be the bearings on the center diff. We put a stethoscope on in it in the air and the noise is coming from the center/rear end of the trans. However in a day or so when it's in pieces, we will know for sure. I will keep you posted.
zvilly
I just noticed that same clicking noise when I have my windows down and driving the car at about 10-30 mph. If anyone can figure out what that is i would really like to know. Thanks!
tt jax
Well, I had my car at the dealership for a week. They have been unable to get to it yet since they fired one of their techs (Ryan Davis). They only have one real technician now working on Subarus.... I have picked up my car and am now driving it until they can get me in again. Lovely, I know, but I would rather be driving it versus it sitting there. Especially since I know it's nothing that will blow up anytime soon at least. So I have no news as of yet... If it wasn't going to be covered under warranty, I would just have Ryan tear it apart at the shop, but alas.. with a new baby, I can't afford to spend much. So I will just have to wait in line to get my car worked on. I'll update as soon as I can..
jarrod
Guys mine ended up being the shifter, the snap ring had popped off. I suggest checking this and maybe replace the grease as well
BLACKonBLACK Limited
I sold my car but my noise was not caused from the snap ring I think there was a bearing going in the tranny
ClimberDHexMods
I am just one of thousands with a 5eat, but I personally have never heard anything like this. Could it be limited to the 5mt guys? That would limit your search list.
