5MT SWAP: 06 WRX into 05 LGT anyone?

hi I am LGT newb (but not a GC or GD newb by no means)

Has anyone swapped a 06+ WRX 5MT into an 05 LGT 5MT?

The reason I ask is I want the 4.11 final ratio in my L'RX race car( www dot sebaru dot net for details) and I want the 3.70 final in my new used 05 LGT. The LGT was purchased as a daily driver and road trippin' machine....

I just bought my 05 LGT with 26k original miles. I dig the car alot but it is a terrible highway cruiser. The motor raps out at 3500 rpm at 85mph. It just guzzles the gas. I understand what Subaru was trying to compete with the German luxury cars. It seems they sacrificed 0-60 times for highway cruising....

Plus this car is handles terrible in cross winds. It gets blown off course with the slightest cross wind....I guees Ican post this peeve inthe suspension threads...

Thanks for looking and thanks for offering advice.....

Sure. Swap the trans, and diff and button everything back up. It'll all, very likely, swap no problem.

All bolt patterns are the same, or should be. Both have an R160, so those will swap no problem. Keep the clutches that came with the cars. You could swap the driveshafts if you wanted. The axles should all bolt up without concern.

Should be about as straight forward as it gets.

You should not be going that fast; 85mph. You are speeding, thus breaking the law. If you ran at the speed limit, your RPMs would be lower.

Yes they swap over. You need to swap rear diffs as well. Have fun!

85 is only ten over on most interstates...hardly wreckless driving (its comparative to doing 34 in a 30). Most police officers I know, and for good reason, don't waste their time on anything that is not 15+ mph over the speed limit...

Coolness. I haven't had a chance to get the LGT up on the lift to look at the rear end portion. I wasn't sure if subaru changed something like the speed sensors or the harness connectors.

Does anyone know if the R160 on the LGT has the LSD like WRXs?

Yeah 85 is speeding in most states but on I-25 in New Mexico the HP doesn't mind 0-10 over 75. Any higher and they get you. But for the most part my trip from Utah to Texas(my folks still live in TX) is mostly state roads at 65 mph. The Utah HP on I-15 is pretty tolerable as well....

Thanks for the advice. It nice posting on a forum where everyone that posts on the thread actually gives advice and not useless comments or inside jokes....it'll keep me coming back...unlike "Nauseate".com

Thanks,

I'll post my results on this thread and on my website

Yes, but you got one issue.

LGT's gearbox doesn't have speedo sensor. I believe WRX until MY07 requires speedo sensor in the tranny. It can be installed (the gear is in the tranny), but you need to crack the tranny open.

Otherwise it will just swap out, and since MY06 also has push-type clutch like MY05+ LGT.

My officers in my local gov't dont go after anything under 15+ over it isnt worth the gas hahahah

Correct me if I am wrong, but can't you just swap rear diff's and get the same effect??

Nope. Front diff would then be different. That's cause for Kaboom!

  • 1 month later...

I just finished swapping the 3.70:1 ratio '06 WRX 5 Spd Trans and rear diff. into my My05 LGT. It was pretty easy. Just swapped the harness and speed sensor plug over and the rest was Big-Kid-Legos. I couldn't help but install a down pipe while I had the stock boat anchor off.:p

I have only driven it to work this morning so I don't have any data yet. So with the 3.70:1 ratio the revs are almost 500 rpm less for the same speed compared to the 4.11 OEM stuff. I like it! So my puporses of my LGT being my highway car it works. The 4.11s in my race car will be big bonus too!

So the '06+ WRX 3.70:1 trans into LGT swap was easy.:) The other way is much more "fun". I will have to split the case and install the speed sensor gearing and stuff. While the case is split I am going to install a OBX front LSD. I'll try and take pics and post them on my website. Geez, I need to update that thing...

4.11+Front LSD+WRX SWAP+VF39+GC8+Coilovers= 2500 pounds of

So far it looks like the MPG dispaly show 1-3 mpg better but its too soon to tell.

I do have to figure out why the cruise control stopped working. I seriously doubt the nuetral and reverse switches are different. I am thinking it's the tranny ground wire that I forgot to put on....might need to realcibrate the revs/mile in the ROM...

Long time no update.......

Both cars are finicky when it comes to the neutral switches. You have to swap the year MY specific ones to the right car and trans. The normally open/normally closed logic is different for each. Swapping pins in the harness plugs doesn't work either. I tried....

The LGT was especially finicky. I had to use its original switches. In the '95/'06 L'RX I could tunr the CEL code off with RomRaider and the cruise control would still work. The LGT crusie would not work.

Took a road trip from Ogden, UT to Lake Tahoe in July. Cruised at 85 the whole way with A/C on with varying head and cross wind and hill grades. I averaged 28-29. So I am satisfied with the swap. I did because I could and we have lift in the shop.

My L'RX on the other hand is beast now with 4.10s and front LSD. More updates on that later.....
