Laser Interceptor

I have been looking at installing a laser jammer / radar detector. Does anyone have one of these? And how easy was it to install? In three years I've had my Legacy I have been pulled over three times... 123 mph in a 55 mph zone got a ticket for 94, 87 mph in a 55 mph zone verbal warning, 83 mph in a 55 mph zone got a ticket for 74. Maybe this device may help me avoid a future ticket. And yes I know I could slow down.

Azzman, Escort makes an upgrade for their GPS driven radar detector that gives you enough time to avoid a laser beam ticket. The detector itself is first class for K band and X band radar. You should be able to speed with abandon except for aircraft. I recently did a 1,100 mile trip generally above 80 and many times above a sustained 100 mph without any introductions to the state's Gestapo.

I installed the Beltronics Laserpro module (basically the same thing as the Escort) on a different car a few years back, and it worked great. For installation... You will need to get some wires through the firewall and trunk lid, and screw the front sensors on. The best place is probably in the lower bumper cutout, out towards the fog lights (both within 18 inches of the license plate). I don't know about the Legacy, but on the other car I didn't have room to get screws in at the location I wanted so I used emblem adhesive. It lasted for about a year and a half before one of them fell off :) So yeah, don't take the lazy way out.

how did you not get arrested for 123 in a 55? When i had my camaro I got pulled over for 90 in a 35 and i had 3 cops come and hastle me and almost arrest me, and usually cops give domestics a much easier time than someone in a import.

If you put in a "jammer" they will know you have one and you will get pulled over anyways.

I have read really good reviews about the Escort!

I opted for an integrated unit, so you can't see any of the detector hanging on the dash or what not.

From all the cops I know, they say if they pull you over, and then they see a radar detector on the windshield or something, you're getting the ticket. So just hope you don't get to that stage!

we need Tsi+wrx 's advice on this one, he knows more than I do. I'll go annoy him and tell him to look at this thread

I have a calibre K40 +laser diffusers. I'm sure he'd call mine crap, but they definitely have saved my ass, so its all I need :)

Brother TSI+WRX is gonna flood this thread with GOOD info :)

eh, i was going to give tsi+wrx a link to this thread, but I don't think this guy gets it, and should just slow the hell down and be a good driver. the idiot who he comes off to be, seems to me, like he deserves exactly what he gets

I was wondering who would ask that... I had just turned over 1000 miles and was traveling north on I-294 just a few miles south on O'hare here in the Chicago burbs. It was about 2:30 in the morning, very light traffic traveling in the left center lane at about 80 mph. in the left lane was a late model white Honda Accord traveling 70-75 I was overtaking but very slowly. But by the time I got next to him I was now doing 80-83 and he was right along with me for at least a good mile. We got to a small crest looked across four lanes and nobody was around... so I thought :) lets open it up... so I hit the gas hard got it up to around 130 from what I saw thats when I passed a market blacked out state trooper on the right shoulder. Damn not good. I slowed to 80 but knew I had been had. He pulled me over and asked me do you know why I pulled you over? I answered sure I was going about 130 mph. He asked me if I was drinking? I replied no if I was drinking I'd be going about 62 mph. He laughed and asked for license and insurance. He said I locked you in at 123 mph any reason for your speed? I told him no just some fun new car now had 1003 miles on it. He peaked in to see the odometer reading and said what the hell is in this car? I replied it appears a lot of trouble and a turbo charged engine. He asked again if I was sure I had not been drinking and then asked it I had any knives, guns, bombs etc. in the car. I replied nope your welcome to look. He replied no thats not necessary. This in a higher pitched voice he said... do you know you suprised the S%^$ out of me. I replied.. I was just having some fun and meant no harm. He then said he was sitting there and saw the both of us come over the crest, and my radar was reading 80 and I was going to let both of you go but then all of a sudden you took off like a bat out of hell and my radar went form 80 to 123 like that. He said he appreciated my honesty about the drinking but I am going to have to write you a ticket I can't let you go at that speed. He then informed me... I could arrest you for reckless driving but since you are not drinking and you signaled your lane change at 120 mph I just going to write you up for 94 mph. He wrote me the ticket told me to enjoy the new car an have a nice evening.

The 87 in a 55 was along I-294 as well only about 30 mies south close to I-55. I was in the left lane doing about 80 coming back from a football game in Champaign when I got a welcome tailgate from a Yellow Dodge Neon. I was wondering if this was a wanna be Neon or the real thing so when traffic let up I put my foot down and see... well it was not the real deal. After goosing it up to about 130-140 I slowed back down to 90 and moved over to see when the Yellow Neon would re-appear. Well a state trooper appeared first and as he said... he herd me go by while he sat on the shoulder. When he caught up to me I began to pull over before he had his lights on. Young guy 20's approached me and said what's the hurry I said no hurry I just driving fast very light traffic and coming back from the Illini game. He said yes that was a great game I watched it before I started my shift. I agreed great game. He asked right away and said... this car in not stock is it? I said no some mods up to what Subaru calls a stage II mod. Very fun he said looks like fun. We kept talking like I had just met him at a bar or something... as it turns out he has a Mustang GT500 and loves cars. We talked for about 15 minutes or about each others cars, so then he finally said looks like you haven't been drinking this evening and you don't have any drugs in the car do you? I laughed and said no. He said okay I'm going to let you go, I really don't care how fast you drive were out here looking for DUI's drugs, that kind of thing. I had to ask him how fast did he clock me he said 87 mph. He did take my license and said if everything checks out he would send me on my way. And he did. :)

Yes at speed of 100 plus bad things can happen. I stick to a safe speed for conditions and I don't follow to close. If you not close to anything your not going to crash. My friend say I am the most polite passive aggressive drive they have seen. In my 19 years of driving in and around chicago I have seen some pretty crazy things all of which involve a junker car and or driving to fast for conditions. I've seen a tire come off a conversion van. In the summer of 2001 I was in my Miata traveling about 70 was behind a 70's muscle car don't remember which one and out of nowhere the hood flew up in the air end over end about 50 feet in the air while I dove under it. Luckily traffic was light and no one was injured.

after reading some of the posts up there, no, a radar/laser thingy can't stop stupidity from happening, that trumps everything. If you really speed that much, you deserve to get caught.

Are you people f'in serious?

123 mph in a 55 mph zone

NO radar detector/laser jammer is going to stop you from getting a ticket on this one. I can't believe you didn't get arrested for reckless, and then some. Around here anything 30+ miles over posted speed limit is automatic arrest I think. A blind lady could tell you're speeding, what makes you think a cop won't pull you over just because he can't clock your speed?

This.

Surprised you didn't get arrested too at 90 in a 35 to be honest. 35 is residential zone speed limit, and god forbid you run over a kid or something. At that speed you'd have to pull a 007 in casino royal to avoid a kid that randomly jumped into the street. NOT SAFE.

If you put in a "jammer" they will know you have one and you will get pulled over anyways.

+1, anything that interferes with the cop's ability to use his equipment properly is illegal. Radar detectors only detect and do not interfere so they are not illegal.

This most informative thread I have seen on radar detectors. Read the long posts by Tsi+WRX, there's a lot of useful information in there.

In the Chicago area here of course depends on the time of day but most overall traffic moves between 70-80 despite a 55 mph limit. I have passed troopers on may times running radar going 75 to 80 and not had a problem. The only time I have had a problem is in the 8- plus range. The construction zone limit is 45 mph but most traffic travels between 60-65. Even the state trooper will pace traffic at 75 or so... I once passed up a trooper five lanes over and got only a verbal warning saying don't you think 75 mph is fast enough. I agreed and he sent me on my way. In central Illinois where the limit is 65 I have been clocked 85 and no problems. Basically they are looking for the 90 plus crown to pull over.

Enforcement depends on the area I have family in Ohio and visit there many times a year but would never go more than just a few miles an hour.

I think honesty and a little but of kindness goes a long way, maybe that's why I have been pulled over maybe 40 times in my years of driving but only gotten about 12 tickets.

Good thing I do not know you as I would personally report your to the state police. You deserve to be pulled off the streets for a healthy 5 years or so.

I do not condone reckless speeding. Ok none of us is an angel and like most people i agree with 5-10-15 mph over espec. if you are cruising on the interstate - because that is just the traffic flow. But by your own admission; your speeds are far in excess of stupidity and the only way to teach you is to have you locked up and have yoru DL taken away.

And no, I largely obey the speed limits 95% of the time. My idea of breaking the speed limits is cruising home from Down Town north on I-94 I tuck in the 3rd lane and put the cruise control at 60. That is 5mph over and 2 lanes to my left are open for people like you. I may get home 3 minutes later but my risks of getting caught or of a speed related accident are negligible.

well, in my LESS THAN TWO YEARS OF DRIVING I can tell you're an idiot.

there's a phrase, "luck favors the prepared", well, "bad luck favors idiots"
