violhence
What is the difference between 5 speed and 6 speed MT? I have heard different things. Some people say it is only gas milage during city driving. Others have told me it does change performance quite a bit (LGT vs Spec B.)
0verboost
Six speed has one more gear.
0verboost
alright jokes over. The gear ratios in the 6spd will be shorter. I had a 6spd swap done in my WRX because I tracked the car more than the average person. I love the gear ratio in the STi tranny.
Guest
6MT is MUCH stronger unit. Shifts better. 6MT (SpecB) gearing is much better all around - both in city and on highway. Better selection of clutches. 6MT alone is worth the SpecB's premium.
I Wish
The 6MT is a lot stronger and ratios shorter as mentioned. So short that I have mistakenly taken off in 2nd.
AZZMAN
Because of the gearing set-up / size the 5MT can go up to 62 mph in second gear while the 6MT can go up to 56 mph before the rev limit kicks in. My Miata has a 6MT and I find it fun to have the extra gear.
Guest
Depends on the redline and wheel diameter.... I can go over 60 mph in 2nd
rao
Six speed has one more gear. That pretty much sums it up. The five speed is plenty strong unless you are going to be at high power levels, say 350 whp + otherwise is is 20% better because it has one more gear and more is always better. Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
zmarko
My gearbox goes to eleven. http://img.skitch.com/20090205-knargkq77pgx2s2f7ethkfatpx.preview.jpg http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KmpWrWhIfM4/SaXNTVclFcI/AAAAAAAAATM/T3zYhJT7EuA/s400/SpinalTap_Eleven.jpg
RJS5689
The 6MT is a lot stronger and ratios shorter as mentioned. So short that I have mistakenly taken off in 2nd. If I come to a yield or need to slow down, I usually take off in second also. It's really easy to get going in second as long as you have a very slight roll going on.
