Talk me out of buying a 335xi

Recommended Posts

I've been looking at used 335xi's lately and the pricing is starting to become very attractive. I could build my LGT into a comparable car by putting in a VF52 and suspension. But by that point I will have spent probably $5k on mods. The 335xi is now only about $13k more than I could get for my LGT in trade and has some things that I can't easily add to the LGT (better steering feel, quieter cabin, 6spd, navi).

I do love my subie, but I think I'd be happier with a car that has a bit more refinement (not to mention an amazing engine).

A friend of mine works for a BMW Dealership in Connecticut and has nothing nice to saw about the BMW. He has seen about 8 different 335xi's come back with blown motors and a few with severe electrical problems.

the other to note is that anytime you want to do anything to the BMW (as far as mods go) you will spend a retarded amount of money, not to mention increase in your insurance premium for putting full coverage on a BMW

I'm not hating because i went through the same thing before i bought the spec.b and my friend talked me out of it...

If you track at all, I've heard a lot of problems with them overheating/going into limp mode in stock form. Seems as though they run kind of "on the edge" of their own abilities from the factory. Same as the guy above, some seem to lose the motor entirely if driven too hard.

If it's just a daily driver, I can't imagine there's any real concern though.

I used to work for a BMW dealership in Missouri and never observed a single failed 335i. I did however drive a Legacy GT that was less reliable than most of the BMW's I was ever around.

I have heard that the first 335i's had some overheating issues, and since then BMW has seen fit to include an oil cooler as standard equipment on that motor. Since that equipment was added I have heard of no further issues.

Well, the LGT has worlds more aftermarket than the Beemer and a lot more down to Earth fans. Plus, much cheaper to maintain overtime. BMW doesn't have their own Jeremy to buy from. Or at least not that we know of. If you're going for status, resale value, and you want what many consider to be one of the best driver's car, then go for it. Does BMW use the Haldex system? If they do, then I wouldn't buy it because I consider Haldex to be the worst joke os an AWD system anyone has ever dreamed up. If I hear one more VW/Volvo/Benz driver say they have AWD, I'm going to lose it. No, you have front wheel drive until you slip and it becomes AWD and by then, it can very well be too late.

Around here BMWs are a dime a dozen, at least the LGT is more unique

You are confusing unique with being good or better. There are undoubtedly more LGT's where you are than there are Yugos too.....

I've given this some consideration as well. Pearl is at 75k and I've considered the VF-52 upgrade, as well trading for a 335xi. I'm probably going to hold on to Pearl for awhile longer...but you should PROcede:

JuiceBox3 FTW :) 370whp with just this undetectable chip. Make sure you get the newer 335 with the Oil Cooler.

However I would rather hold out for a 335 with the DCT transmission or a slightly used "New Style" M3m Pure Sex.

I will be driving my 05 LGT 'till the wheels come off and at that point it will be a dedicated toy along with some other European car in the garage :)

That seems all well and good but coming from Vishnu, I'd like to see proof before I spend $1100 on a reflash. That's just me, though. I'm not saying it couldn't or can't happen, it's just that I've heard that they can be a little optimistic with their numbers.

If you're trying to make 370 whp out of the Lgt get the 335xi it's a lot more fun to drive around if you're trying to have a wide useable powerband. My friend has a chipped 335 and it is very sneaky and can get you in a lot of trouble.

335xi FTW! I'm sorry i love my leggy, but if could easily afford a 335xi, my leggy would be at the dealer getting traded in. Its a much more refined car, the power is AMAZING, and i'm sure you can pull more vagina with a BMW than a subby, sorry guys its true.

You can attract tons of vag with a Suby dude. It just so happens that in order to do it, you also need to have a vag yourself, and the vag you attract will often be wearing flannel shirts and work boots...

You do know that you can buy a 335xi with a manual transmission right?

As soon as the 2010 335XI MANUAL WAGON is released this flannel shirted, work booted "vag" will buy one since it is the only decent sport wagon left on the planet:lol:
