Tranny Swap

Recommended Posts

I know nothing about the mechanics of cars really (in terms of taking them apart and putting them back together) but I was wondering if anyone knew how complicated it would be to swap an auto for a manual transmission in a 96-99 MY Outback. I would assume it would involve more than just the tranny and shifter. Do you have to swap the ECU? Anything else? Would it be completely stupid to even want to do so?

Well you can chuck the TCM out, and I've heard that you can still use the auto ECU and trick it to think it's still an automatic and just always in neutral. Otherwise it shouldn't be too difficult to stick a manual ECU in there. The only connections for the 5MT are the neutral switch and the reverse light switch so you get to throw a whole mess of wiring out with your TCM.

One thing to watch out for, watch your gear ratios. Make sure that your new 5MT has the same gear ratio as your rear diff or very bad things will happen, either that or get a new diff with your 5MT.

I have seen complete 5MT drivetrains for sale for as little as $2K, that included the trans, rear diff, driveshaft, and axles. After you factor in shipping, it might be cheaper to find a junked suby and cannibalize what you need, or sell yours and buy one with a manual.
