1-3-2-4
So I was looking at tire rack putting the brake rotors and pads on my wish list to order 2 weeks from now until it dawned on me I did not see a listing for brake shoes for the e-brake which at the current moment the car holds like poo on hills with the brake up... I would prefer to order all from the same place anyone know of any other model subaru where it would fit my car? I have rear disc brakes.
Roadnuts
Chances are your shoes are fine. In reality they shouldn't wear unless you leave them on while driving. It sounds like you need an adjustment of the cables and the shoes. Adjusting the shoes is easy, remove the rubber plug on the backing plate, and with a screwdriver, or brake tool spin the wheel towards the center of the hub/axle. Adjusting the cables is also very easy, remove the center console trim around the handle, remove 10mm locknut and tighten the secondary 10mm adjustment nut until satisfied with how it holds. Being a 95 I'd recommend both adjustments. Hope that saves you some bucks!! Incase you're still in need, you should be able to get these from Wagner, ie:Napa. 1-3-2-4
that might be it.. I have a brake spoon tool I think that's what it was called I had to do this on my impreza but I forgot which way to turn the star adjuster wheel... I think it's down to bring the pads away from the inner rotor... I have to check the cable this weekend.
Roadnuts
Whether you have drum or disc brakes in the rear, you always turn the wheel towards the center of the hub/axle. I usually tighten it until the wheel locks up, then 3 clicks out. Just make sure it doesn't drag after that!
1-3-2-4
yeah I should of said turn it away from the hub to bring the shoes away from the hub but I will give this a try this weekend since I need to do emissions.
1-3-2-4
how did you get the 10mm locknut off? when I was trying it would just try and turn the whole thing including the braided cable.
Roadnuts
The 10mm nut is probably rusted in place. You may want to try using a line wrench on the "nut" end, and a pair of vise grips if the whole line is spinning. It should be held in place with the brake line bracket/clip... is this gone or broken?
1-3-2-4
brake line bracket clip? It's still in.. Also nothing looked rusted but It does not look like it's ever been adjusted before... It's so bad now that I went to park on a hill which was hardly anything.. parked the car put it in 5th gear and pulled the e-brake up... Car starts to slowly roll back so I had to find someplace else to park.. Lucky for me it's going to be near 80F this weekend so I can finally check this on each rotor. Roadnuts
Sorry for the confusion, I was still in the rear of the car! The 10mm nuts on the e-brake handle end are locked together, there should be 2 of them. Hold the lower nut with an open-end wrench and loosen the top nut with a socket. Once the top nut is removed, you can spin the lower nut in until satisfied with the e-brake handle position. FYI, you always want to park in first or reverse, they are both constant mesh ie: no rolling! Hope that helps!
1-3-2-4
So I did the star wheels the passener rear was really off. So after doing that and checking the driver side the brake handle does not come up as high now. About 6 clicks and it's firm.
